New trip planning May 2024

Hello all,

Last year myself and my friend did the Caledonian way in May, and a few extra days on the Black Isle while waiting for the train back from Inverness to the car parked in Ardrossan. What a wonderful trip we had camping all the way with our electric bikes.

This year we fancy the Hebridean way leaving the car in Oban.

Rough Route as follows

Oban - CastleBray - Stornoway - Ullapool - Kyle of Lockalsh - Mallaig - Oban.

We are both 67, and the important thing to know is that my friend will finish his second round of chemotherapy for his prostrate cancer on 26th April.

We both want to go, and the planning of this is, I am sure helping him get through the next few months.

My biggest concern is that if it all proves too much, and we have to get back to Oban via train from say Ullapool is this easy to achieve with the bikes. The last think I would want is to be stranded in the middle of Scotland.

Any advise on the route and backup possibilities?

Many Thanks

Ian

Re: Camping Chairs - Helinox Chair One and lookalikes

I have one of these, and find it very comfortable as an alternative to a chair.

Re: Ardrossan to Campbeltown Ferry

Thanks all for the replies.

Looks like Arran might be the solution.

Re: Ardrossan to Campbeltown Ferry

Thanks for the replies,

I asked them about two bikes and received the following reply.

Dear Ian,
Thank you for your email.
Unfortunately, we do not offer train travel as we are a coach company.
We do have services that operates from Glasgow to Campbeltown, however, we do not have the capacity on these coaches to have two bikes be brought on board.
I apologise for any inconvenience caused.
Kind regards,

So maybe they allow one, but not two.

I will have a look at the other route suggested, and see if that works.

Ardrossan to Campbeltown Ferry

Hello all,

I have been following the forum for some time, but this is my first post.

It may be useful for others who may wish to use the Ardrossan to Campbeltown ferry that its 2023 start date has been further delayed until June 1st.

We had planned our Caledonian Way tour based upon using this ferry and wanted to go mid May (before the midges) but this is not now possible. We had planned on leaving the car at Ardrossan and the catching a train from Inverness to Glasgow at the end, then ride back to Ardrossan.

The bus service from Glasgow to Campbeltown does not take bikes so we are stumped.

Does anyone have any bright ideas?

Many Thanks

Ian
