Thank you that's very useful advice as was everyone's. Ive bene looking at the 530 and will probably go for that one. Ribble do a nice front mount designed to attach to the level 5 carbon bars as well and it's relatively cheapkeyboardmonkey wrote: ↑27 Aug 2024, 6:00pmForwardGhoul wrote: ↑24 Aug 2024, 5:45pm It's new bike day, Ribble Endurance SLR Shimano 105 DI2 and I was looking for opinions.on the above. Their not cheap and I could get some other stuff for the price I'll pay for even the basic model of each of these.
Are they a waste of money given the amount of stuff your phone/watch can do. Im only into stats, don't use GPS or maps part of the fun is to discover a new route just by exploring.
On the off chance that the OP is still reading this thread… as I understand it the Ribble is a £3k+ bike and we’re asked about the worth of a bicycle computer that might cost a couple of hundred quid.
You might not currently want all the bells and whistles that come with a dedicated GPS device - I don’t - but just in case (and to get a model with a decent battery life) I suggest you look no further than the feature-packed Garmin Edge 530. It’s the model before the 5xx range went touch screen and *probably* represents the best bang for your buck out there. (Because it is geared up to do a range of jobs it has a very impressive battery life - the main reason I got mine.)
I’ve calculated that I’ve switched my 530 between six different bikes that between them cost much less than the price of the Ribble. I keep my iPhone in my rear pocket or rack bag for phone stuff and use a dedicated GPS device for all the cycling related stuff.

Re: Computers Vs Phone
I'm curious about Strava I used to have an iPhone but switched to Android found the iPhone to restricted (it only works better with apple products for example) and to be honest rather boring. I had an old cheap cateye on my old winter bike and that was fine for my needs but as I've upgraded my bike thought I should upgrade my computer choice as well, if necessary. Hence the question?Jezrant wrote: ↑25 Aug 2024, 1:49pmI'm only really interested in the same data, although less so for GPS. I use cheap Wahoo sensors for heart & cadence that sync with Apple Health on the iPhone in the pocket on my jacket/jersey. They seem fairly accurate. For distance & speed, I use cycling apps on my iPhone, but I also have cheap old Cateye computers on the bars of a couple of bikes that are small and discreet but easy to read and very easy to use while cycling. They also have a few other functions that can be useful. For maps and GPS, I use my iPhone when needed and whichever app depending on the type of riding (Komoot, Cycle.travel or OS Maps, but I think only Komoot syncs with Apple Health for keeping track of rides). Years ago I used to have a Garmin but I now find an iPhone better for my needs. Are you using or interested in using Strava?ForwardGhoul wrote: ↑25 Aug 2024, 8:08am To answer Jonathan I'm only really interested in Heart, Cadence, AVG Speed and more importantly miles cycled however if this unit gives me all that plus GPS then what's the harm.

Re: Lactic Burn
I'm using SPD's after a horrible experience with SL's that snapped when walking and trying to ride back home ouldnt use them again. Plus the MPD530 pedals are good.
I could maybe try moving the cleats further back and changing the float, could be the position on my foot.

It's a burning sensation in my calf muscle, like someone is pressing a hot iron directly inside the muscle. It's very painful when it happens. Doesn't happen every time and the time it happens is random. It can be five minutes after I've set off or two hours in.
One side or both?
Is it only after strenuous work?
Does it go away if you stop riding? And how long does that take?
Does it hurt when you press the spot?
Any shooting sensation or pins and needles?
And are you on any medication?
Jonathan
It generally starts after half an hour of riding
Yes it stops when I stop
Ive never really pressed or held it so I don't know
No pins and needles just a constant burning sensation right on the calf muscle.
No medication
Doesn't happen every time I go out and I can cycle through the pain

Re: Computers Vs Phone
That's an excellent point and we cyclists do like things to be tidy and neat. Yeah it looks like given the opinions here I'll go with a basic Garmin with a front mount.

Re: Lactic Burn
No it's a burning sensation, as I've described above. I keep going but it's very painful and very unpleasant. No idea what the cause is.cycleruk wrote: ↑24 Aug 2024, 6:57pm I get "burn" in my inner thigh muscle (vastus medialis ?) but never in my calves.
I get it when doing a spirited ride and generally I can withstand the pain.
Is it possibly a cramp and not a burning sensation ?
I have cramp sometimes in my calves at night and yes that is quite painful.

Re: Computers Vs Phone
Thanks to everyone for their replies, looking at these it seems that getting a Garmin or Wahoo is the way to go. I bought a bike that has an aero pedigree (but it's roots are for distance) it would be ridiculous to mount a phone on Level 5 Carbon bars. To answer Jonathan I'm only really interested in Heart, Cadence, AVG Speed and more importantly miles cycled however if this unit gives me all that plus GPS then what's the harm. And no I don't really want to spoil the look of a bike that has internal cabling and a wireless group set. I know that seems childish and petty but a big phone mount on an aero bike would be ridiculous. Ribble sell a front mount designed to attach to the bars and I will have a scout around for a cheap Garmin. Even secondhand.

Thanks for the help. The steering post should have been supplied separately but was inside headset. Didn’t get a torque spanner either. All fixed now

New Ribble Ultra Sport Handlebars
Is there a gap on level 5 bars where the bars meet the forks. Building up a new Ribble and there’s movement in the headset. The steering bolt didn’t come separately either. Any ideas it’s a brand new bike. When you tighten the bolt on the cap it’s not flush

Erskine Bridge
Planning to go from Kilwinning to Arrochar on the 29th as I’m on holiday from work for a few days. Can anyone tell me if the Erskine Bridge is open again for bikes? Last time I tried that ride had to get a police escort back down the slip road. Very embarrassing. Don’t want a repeat

Thank you to all who replied.
Yes it is an old bike, a Ribble winter bike and I adore the old girl. The common theme here with the suggestions seems to be that it’s seized and needs some lube, I’ll also check the cables as well. I don’t use the LH shifter often and I’ll try these solutions
