So is this a model, night club girl or serious cyclist? How do we define the difference?

Does anyone know the lady? Answer to follow

S'ok Dave apology accepted.
I would agree with others that generally riding with earphones does not stop you hearing other road users it is all relative to the volume of the music player I guess, but insulated in a car with windows shut there is even less liklihood of hearing outside noises.. and that is from someone who has just spent weekend repeating everything to teenage son with his ipod shuffle firmly glued to his ears..

Not sure how anyone misses seeing a big truck, but then I was not exactly invisible in bright orange cycle top, perhaps the problem was female/female, generally do not have too much problem being seen at this time of the year when wearing spring/summer gear and it is more obvious I am female, with the male driving population....

Thank you Si this is what I was going to say in reply to Dianne. Just how will these classes prevent cruelty to animals, those already inflicting cruelty will just continue to do so and pets bought for Xmas will continue to be abandoned in card boxes/thrown out of cars etc.
I'm sorry if you think this is a depressive attitude but there is a real world out there; despite education children are damaged by those closest to them and animals are treated cruelly daily in this country.

Hey Dave, I commute and cycle in all sorts of road conditions so I expect very little from motorised users, believe me.
As I said it was not myself but my companions who noticed the young lady had some form of earphones in....so could not comment on whether or not they were hearing aids or not (you might want to ask R2).

Believe me when my life/wellbeing is at stake the warning shout I give is usually loud enough to penetrate ordinary conditions; windows shut/radio on. It normally results in the driver stopping...

Drivers with ear phones....

Is this a worrying trend. Yesterday a car began to pull out of a driveway in front of me, clearly hadn't seen me so I yelled a warning and began moving out to the opposite side of the road. It was raining, and if she stopped whilst I slammed brakes on the chances are I would have skidded or slammed into the side of her. Having shouted a warning I was surprised when she continued apparently oblivious and somehow I swerved around the front of her as she turned out and continued in the opposite direction. Incidently she pulled out into the gap between myself and my companions had they been any closer to me there could have been carnage..... My companions said she then proceded with her hand over her mouth in horror but clearly had in-ear phones in use..... this presumably is why she did not hear my shout...

To me this is quite worrying as usually a shouted warning to a car driver who has not seen me is enough to alert them to my presence but what chance if they no means of hearing us.... should ear phones be banned along with carphones?????

When I read the start of the thread I assumed we were talking about care of wild animals/birds found abandoned......
The comments regarding classes at colleges was interesting but I felt would only be attended by those interested, if the interest is there then they will probably have already found out the info via other means...
Reading on I found that we were talking about domestically kept pets. There is only one way to ensure that domestically kept pets are looked after properly and that is to licence and monitor their owners. But too many pets are traded between a variety of media where "baby rabbits" or "Baby Kittens" are offered for sale.
..and remember all children are registered and licenced in this country it does not stop cruelty ...... but then that is opening yet another barrel....

... you should have gone to the exhibition of cycling erotica at Mildenhall last year there were some wonderful pictures depicting the male and female form with bikes..... viva la difference. It is, after all, what makes the world go around and no amount of male or female lib will alter the fact that nature designed us to appreciate the attributes of the other sex.

We used to have a bicycle belle comp at York Rally, where the young lady was not only judged to be attractively turned out with her bike but also expected to have some mechanical knowledge of her bike.... It was stopped as being sexist
So if we are a "true" cyclist with a well turned out bike, knowledge and ability we are condemned and if models are used who, presumably, do not cycle we are condemned again.

If it is of any use, have cycled part of the WHW and used ordinary touring bike, as all my touring/RSFing has been done (and yes done the length of Ridgeway on same bike). On the part I used; what was unrideable on my touring bike would have been unrideable on any bike, ( a steep rough hill), otherwise it was OK. No reason why you can't use a hybrid on it.

Always carried my SLR in it's CCS bag, on top of the saddle bag, ie with the shoulder strap slung around the saddle and with a bungee cord over it just to help support it and prevent too much bouncing.....it's always worked for me, does not take up valuable packing space and is easily accessible. The camera can be wrapped in a plastic bag if wet.
