Re: Cheap and Awful Road Surfacing

We had something similar - very gravelly and not nice to ride on. On raising it with the council we were told that it was meant to be like this: it was designed for easy application, and that weight of traffic would compress and bind it over time. To an extent this has become so - it has become les...

Re: Do you wear a helmet?

should we have another poll: how many people have converted their bikes to disc brakes? Disc brakes: -stop you a lot better than rim brakes -work better in the wet than rim brakes -often have better modulation than rim brakes -don't make you hot or sweaty -don't make you look funny -can now be used...

Re: Should cyclist's cheer up?

Always cycling home with a massive smile, flies are getting to be a problem at the moment though. The weather in the last few weeks has been glorious - I need to bring sun cream into work soon. Having only started cycle commuting at the tail end of last year it's really nice to be shedding some laye...

Re: First try on clipless pedals

They are awesome :) I seem to have voided falling over at lights, and am now well over 1000 miles into my first set of cleats. When I had a front disc brake (necessitated new fork and whhel as well) fitted I got a courtesy bike with pedals and nearly fell off that several times (instinctively pulled...

Re: Cyclists revenge, good stories, thoughts etc.

A Lexus lost some paint to me this morning. Having "overtaken" rather close (two lane A road, short stream of traffic in other direction, pretty gusty crosswinds) he then stopped after a hand waving "you should be in the gutter" conversation) I pulled up next to the passenger sid...

Re: Refusing to lift the barriers

Is this a purely manually operated gate?

I have a little magnet on my front wheel which trips the road sensors for traffic lights and security gates.

Re: Do you get 'competitive' when spotting a fellow cyclist?

Absolutely. Mainly because the back wheel is an easy thing to focus on, and that generally means I'll close the gap (great motivator rather than contest really) By the time the gap is closed I'm generally going a fair whack faster than the other cyclist, so overtaking is the natural conclusion - of ...

Hmm 10 years isn't yoghurt in the sun territory in my book, and this is a B&D. Mind you chatting with a geek friend at work they suggested using a welder to refresh it... see instructables for more ideas. It also does better when I remember to charge it each day - but it is on the way out unless...

First RTA

To be fair to the driver in question I think it was six of one and half a dozen of the other. I was taking my normal route to work, which includes a long right hand bend, but the bend has a T junction (where the bend is the "straight ahead" road). A way down the road is a one lane bridge, ...

I think 5 or 6 miles, say half an hour each way, is about the limit for most people. This was confirmed when I put on a Doctor Bike session the other day at a big office locally. None of the bikes I saw came further than that, most only a couple of miles. I don't know - I manage 10 miles in about 3...

Fog lights / Batteries

I'm ashamed of myself, my home made lights didn't do too well this morning, I think my old drill battery might be finally dying - it was a good workhorse*. I might go to a cheapo store and see how cheaply I can replace it like for like, because they're good power sources, serious storage and decent ...

A, in excess of 10 miles each way
Pretty much 10 miles exactly...

B, How many times a week.
10, 5 there, 5 back ;-)

C, All Year
Yep - how else am I going to get to work?

Freezing fog this morning was interesting - less fog lights on cars than normal!

Don't be put off, just learn from other peoples misfortunes.

The people here do many more miles on a bike than most, and the stories almost never result in serious injury, just a good shouting, or a kick to a car door.

Apparently not though - the other site linked above claims they are karts...

I tend to shout "Oi" at drivers if they come past at high speed and low clearance. If I know they are coming (which I often do) then I'll leave my right hand off the handlebars and give their wing mirror a good clip. Wing mirrors are designed to take collisions like that, so they just fold...
