Caledonian Sleeper best time to Book

Hi all

I am hoping to book a ticket on the Caledonian Sleeper train on 14 May 2012 London to Inverness..........

Wondered when is the best time to book a ticket to get a cheap price ie in advance or a few weeks before (risky in case tickets all go)

Any ideas on the best approach

Home town Oxford

Many thanks

531colin wrote:Is the bike really big enough? You have the saddle as far back as possible, you have a high-rise stem...and I don't like those adjustable stems, they flex too much.
I think you need say 2 sizes bigger bike than that, so you can get the reach long enough and the bars high enough without the biggest stem you can find, or the saddle at the end of its adjustment. On a bike the right size, you can set the saddle position for comfortable/efficient pedalling, and select a stem that gives you a comfortable reach and bar height. For efficient riding you need to lean forward to brace your lower back, and so you can pull on the bars uphill.
I think the best advice is to tell us where you live....somebody on here will know a local shop where they encourage you to test ride tourers, and where they will adjust the bike to fit you.....and you can find out how they ride.
The Ridgeback (and other) tourers have been reviewed on here, if you search.

Hi all

Really appreciated the time people have taken to reply..........

In terms of size I am 5':9" and the Marin Point Ryes is a 19" frame size ..

I tried sitting a bit forward on my saddle on the way home last night and it resulted in a much more upward position.

Main idea with getting a tourer was I thought I may go faster but I am wondering whether just to go with this bike (maybe with slick tyres as suggested)

Touring Bike v's Off Road bike (LEJOG)

Hi all…….

I have a Marin Point Ryes bike which I ride every day and do about 100 miles per week.

I am doing LEJOG in May this year and have considered getting a Ridgeback Voyager touring bike for this trip.

Question is why is a touring bike called a tourer and what would be the main differences between the two bikes.

I sometime feel the Marin is a bit hard work so would be interested in whether of go for an official touring bike for my trip.

Would welcome any comments………..thanks for your time

Re: Ridgeback Voyage 2010 Touring Bike Frame Size

Just measured my inside leg and it's actually 31.5" longer than I thought

Based on this and my height of 5'10" which size would be best

Many thanks for your time

Big T wrote:Can you clarify how tall you are? 5'102?

I'm 6ft 2in and ride a 58cm Ridgeback Panorama. I have short legs (31") and a long body, so it fits me OK with a longer stem fitted, but someone else of a similar height might find it too small.

Hi Big T

Thanks for the reply.....sorry miss typed

Should have read..............I am 5' 10"

Kind regards

Re: Ridgeback Voyage 2010 Touring Bike Frame Size

Brucey wrote:To measure your inside leg for bike frames, you need to straddle a horizontal broomstick (or similar) like you are sitting on it, i.e. with some pressure. Stockinged feet, flat on the floor, then measure from the top side of the broomstick down. Best to have a (close) friend help you do this! If your inside leg comes out at 29" still than you probably need a 50 or 52cm frame. The bike in question is available in sizes from 48 to 60cm in 2cm increments.

Frame sizes 'assume' (rightly or wrongly) that the rider is proportioned in a certain way. Often they are not. At the least this may mean a different stem, or a frame that is a slightly different size to get the reach right. About 99 in 100 people can be thus accomodated, but In extremis, you may be best off with a custom frame. Most people try a few off the peg frames first before going this route.

Best to go to a good bike shop and get yourself fitted up properly; even if it costs a few quid more first time round, it is money well spent. I mean, unless you had done it before, you wouldn't expect to buy shoes blind or mail order, would you? Not before a marathon run especially....

hth and good luck with LEJOG

cheers

Brucey

Can thanks for the detailed reply............

I will have a good tonight and post back

Ridgeback Voyage 2010 Touring Bike Frame Size

Hi all

I am considering buying the above bike for my LEJOG and wondered what frame size I should go for....

I am 5'102 and have an inside leg of 29"....checked the website and it makes reference to a 56-58 size but nothing about inside leg ? Or does that not matter ?

Many thanks for your time

Re: hub dynamo/charging on jogle

I thought about the same problem....GPS/Smart phome/Ipod ! ! ! !

I will be able to charge as I am hopefully staying in B&Bs etc but incase of an emergencies I brought one of these.....

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B005 ... BNKWQ0X5N3

Been out recently with flat devices and have been able to fully charge on the go . Also I was able to use my HTC desire which was totally flat.....as mentioned mainly for emergencies and not a sorce of regular charging

I am also setting off in May 2012/solo/unsupported but LEJOG

Flying back from Orkney (posting bike)

Hi all

It has been suggested that I could fly back from Orkney (Live in Oxfordshire) following my LEJOG trip in May 2012.

I am told it may be possible for the local bike shop in Kirkwall to package up a bike and that post it back.

Has anyone ever done this from Orkney as it could be an intetesting way to end my trip !

Many thanks for your time

Regards

Mike
