Re: Shimano dyno hubs and wheel size

Brucey wrote: 2 Dec 2023, 11:41am I have seen at least three shimano DH units that went wrong; the causes varied from bad bearings to debris inside. The only one that might have locked up [but didn't] was one where the magnets had come unstuck.
I'm glad I am not the only one - I broke a T-780 one this summer. It developed a dreadful clicking (which I though at first was the headset). It turned out that one of the bearing cups had worked loose. I still struggle to understand how that happened seeming as they should be an interference fit.

Re: Big ring

Low cadence like that means much higher forces - you are likely to develop knee pain. There's a lot of good reasons why people pedal 80-90 rpm.

Years ago my wife and I enjoyed a lovely tour Cambridge-Ely-Wisbech-King's Lynn.

Plastic milk bottle for me. Cut off a long strip and then wind it round until the right thickness is achieved, then trim.

I have a lightly worn pair of 700Cx23 Conti GP4Seasons which I would happily sell for £30. PM me if interested.

pwa wrote: 12 Nov 2023, 4:53am When did Campagnolo reach their zenith with metal (as opposed to carbon) components? The only time I used Campag was around 1996, with their 8 speed Ergo Chorus stuff, and that all seemed pretty good to me. It was certainly very easy on the eye. A few years later the upmarket lines were seeing carbon introduced and while I can see the reasoning, from a marketing point of view, it did remove the classic visual appeal for me.
I'd agree, the later stuff ended up in an ugliness competition with Shimano.

I'd argue it's 1999-ish. The 9s stuff worked sublimely well (and still does), NEVER needed adjusting due to its long cable pull and was still rebuildable.

The big river valleys around Seville are worth considering.

Plenty of other options too: Token and Genetic Karyotype for starters, both a bit nicer than UN300.

The Token didn't last well for me, the cup overlaps the bearing seal and traps water. However the Genetic has lasted two winters on my MTB singlespeed.

Tektro R559? I've only ever run them with Campag Ergos, which is a very happy pairing.

Re: Prices, you have to look around

There are an awful lot of fakes on ebay - chains being the most egregious. If it's a legit retailers ebay site (for example selling returns or ex-demo) then fair enough, but proceed with caution on the rest.

Re: Courier for boxed bike collection?

Most of the offers I was getting were silly prices.
I have generally had an argument at post offices dropping off stuff with Parcel2go labels, they cannot believe the low price I was charged compared to a Parcelforce walk-in. It's ended up with weighing and tape measures. As a result I cannot be bothered.

Also many bootlids are plastic, with similar weakness.

Re: Courier for boxed bike collection?

Simply put they had a decent website, I had a box already and they would collect from the door. My nearest post office would require a drive.
Hence Paisley Freight / Bike Delivery.

Re: Advice on selling a steel-framed Witcombe bike

They have a reasonable following but I would agree that £250 is probably about right for an as-is old bike.

I love my 1979 Witcomb, lightly modernised with mid-90s Campag bits.
