That's what I thought!

Thank you to third crank and MikeF for their thoughts.

That's what I thought the answer would be.

Could it be done - re-sizing a frame?

I suspect that I know the answer to my own question, but

Could a frame builder unbraze the lugged joints on a 531 frame, shorten the tubes and re-braze the tubes to create a smaller frame?

I suspect that the answer is yes, in that most things are possible, within limits, but that it would not be economic to do so.

I'm thinking about the 25" galaxy frame I have that no-one wants, could it be rebuilt as a 23.5"?

has anyone any experience in this field of lunacy?

Hutchcoat of Ganthorpe, nr Malton North Yorks

Just a quick one to praise Hutchcoat for the powdercoating they did on my commuting bike.

A lovely even finish in a durable slightly metallic grey.

All of the threads were tapped out and the bottom bracket thread was cleaned as well.

One of the two guys there is a time-triallist and obviously likes bikes.

They are not bike specialists, when i went there they had metal garden furniture and agricultural equipment hanging around, but they'll happily spray anything.

Bike Names?

Yes of course they have names!

Dawes Galaxy - Shadowfax
Commuting bike - Fatty Lumpkin

(you may recognise a LOTR theme here)

Currently the newly built Raleigh 531 framed touring bike has yet to acquire a name, but as he's only "been around the block" he's still very young and doesn't know he hasn't got a name yet.

Yes they all have gender too, they are all male - well they've got top-tubes haven't they?

My first car also had a name - Felicity after Ms Kendall, she was good looking when young and still wasn't bad looking even as she was driven to the scrappers.

tricky to say...

Numbnut

There's 6'1" and there is 6'1"

I'm that height too and for years have riden a 23.5 dawes galaxy, but I am short legged (31" trouser) long bodied and carry more that a few spare tyres around the middle.

No doubt a 6'1" who had longer legs and less flesh than me would find a 25" ideal but as escribed on two other posts nearby I built up a 25" galaxy (72 degree parallel) and found it dangerously tall and felt "stretched" when riding it.

I have just completed a 22.5" raleigh touring frame, and with the help of a long seat post and slight rising stem it seems a lot more comfortable, but so far I've only gone round the block on it.

I'd concur with neilob, I think a 25" is probably not the right size for 6'1"

Hi there

A great cycling city.

York has an extensive network of Cycle lanes making it one of the best cities in the UK for cycling.

York is well served by cycling shops, covering everything from BMX to racing kit, but importantly also covering commuting and day to day use. York also has a Bike Rescue project which provides a valuable service.

AS previously described the countryside around York is more or less flat, but it still provides good cycling, the Moors, Dales and Wolds are all within reach.

As a city York provides a good place to live, once you get used to the tourists, and is a very popular city for students, both the University at St John's have good reputations.

I've done it!

I rode the Leeds Liverpool canal in about 1992 - so my particualr memories are probably of litle use.

The biggest obstacle is obvioulsy the Foulridge Tunnel, you have to go over it and I remember being axle deep in mud at one point!

A also remember sleeping rough by the canal just outside Bingley and a delicious bacon&sausage sandwich at 7.00am in Saltaire.

This was my first tour, and despite the problems it didn't put me off touring!

Enjoy the ride
