With regard to people changing travel behaviour, it seems to be a big step- the devil they know is preferrable to the unknown. The company I work for has recently announced that they are relocating their headquarters from a near-motorway-junction location with limited parking to a city-centre locati...

Re: arriva trains
More seats equals more happily seated fare-paying passengers. Right now, demand for seats often exceeds supply and one complaint from a standing passenger, who's paid for a seat, outweighs any number of complaints from freeloading cyclists. So new rolling stock designs and refits happening right no...

Triodos bank has some opportunities to invest directly in renewable energy projects (though not all in the UK), and if you get your electricity from Ecotricity, they invest heavily in building new windfarms. With renewable enegy providers, there is lots of debate over which is really the greenest, b...

It could well be influenced by what they want to see- I didn't get the impression that they were pro-privatisation, but I would guess it was a desk study like you suggest, and would be much improved by people finding out how easy it is to actually take bikes on. Then the British companies might not ...

There's a particular junction in the town I live in where I have had cars pull out right in front of me twice now. It appears to have good visibility so I didn't understand why. Then last week I heard a car-horn loudly barmp at another car who'd done the exact same thing to them. I wonder now if the...

The link to the study referred to by andymiller is here . It is about long distance and international trains. The British companies evaluated mostly do quite well because they offer free reservations, and bikes can be taken on all services (of the companies looked at, which are the old, not current,...

I haven't really noticed a reduction in traffic, but I have noticed more cycles on the road in the past month or so, and they must be coming from somewhere! Many of my colleagues are trying to cut back on driving or at least drive more efficiently. One in particular who is known for having a lead fo...

This major economic recession may be upon us- which could give enough demand to change how the operators see bicycles. I don't think it would make it easier for a while, though, as there will be too many bikes for the physical space available, and so it might be even harder to actually get your bike...

CJ, You clearly tried for years to make this work, and it would have, if enough others had backed you up. Small groups of people can't create the sort of demand that companies will listen to, but large groups can. If every individual chooses to travel in other ways, though, then the large group neve...

Prosecution for irresponsibly driving at 20mph when you 'should' be going 30? Surely the police have better things to do. At least I dearly hope so. It may be less efficient; that's what the study is attempting to research. But if it is, perhaps we are all driving the wrong types of cars. Perhaps we...

I will try to find the info that we compiled and post it here. One thing we did was to search the Sustrans website for route near our major offices and sites to show that there were safe routes available. Of course, lots of routes are safe, but to convince people who don't cycle we wanted something ...

If you look at how problem motorists behave with other motorists, though, it doesn't actually improve much over how they behave with cyclists. It seems to me to be a general selfishness rather than superiority over cyclists- we're just more vulnerable and easier to pick on than more armoured vehicle...
