Re: Any advice for the lone tourer?

I think a big part of successful solo touring is not letting you paranoia levels get out of control. this, in itself, is one of the positive challenges of being solo, that you automatically apply back in real life and generally find you're the calmest person in a (supposed) crisis :) I also think th...

Re: Bicycle transport by bus in Spain

From what I can gather bike transport by trains in Spain is very poor. This is not true, I am sure people with better information will be along but..........I've used trains in Andalucia, Catalunya, Asturias, Cantabria & Leon, I've also used them often in Madrid and Barcelona. Commuter (short d...

Re: Bowling to Edinburgh via canals

nice to see the canal under ice. if you end up in the town, I can recommend a coffee shop. Wellington Coffee is on George St, where Hanover St crosses. It's in the basement under Penhaligons (the opposite side to Starb*cks). Outside Wellington is a lovely long set of railings you can lock the bike t...

Re: Take On Africa - video

last year was great; I cycled there on my way home from Barcelona. I really recommend it, it was a great weekend, with a wide variety of overlanders, non-travelers, wannabes, has-beans, will-be's, etc, etc. really good fun. but they only had one cycle film. really, get in touch with him (tell him Do...

Re: Take On Africa - video

Hi,

have a look at the Adventure Travel Film Festival (http://www.adventuretravelfilmfestival.com/). The organiser (Austin Vince) was looking for cycle films, last time I spoke to him. If you can't find his details I can put you in touch.

cheers

Re: Light Tourer

remember that, overall, your luggage will probably end up weighing the most. so cut that down for starters. http://www.soogate.com/lht-ferry.jpg my setup for Edinburgh to Barcelona and back. I'm not saying it's perfect (as an example of light touring) by any stretch, but I could still lift the bike ...

Brixton Cycles, London

Very helpful bunch of guys. I had a Surly Troll plus Rohloff hub, ordered via email/phone from Barcelona, and sent to Edinburgh and paid for by someone else. I don't think it could have got much more complicated. Oh yeah, the bike had to be delivered within 2 weeks as I was flying in to pick it up. ...

Re: Unnoticable Helmet Suggestion Please

My new MET helmet is quieter than the last one I had. It has more holes in it and is a slightly different shape. But I doubt if that has made much difference. I do wonder if the noise is caused by wind in the straps by the ears, rather than the helmet itself. Motorcyclists have helmet noise problem...

Re: Morocco

hi, I love Morocco, but you're right, it can get a bit warm this time of year. every time I've been to or through Morocco there have been tough days (not necessarily cycling-wise), and that's what gives it a certain appeal to me. it's worth having a look at the forum on Horizons Unlimited, in the Sa...

Re: Looking for a touring mountain bike

After reading some posts here, I've just been having a look around at ebay's steel frames, and there really are some tempters! Even a Thorn frame, though it's up to 13 bids. Nice Konas, Oranges and Konas have caught my eye, and I'd imagine great for a project like this. I must tear myself away befo...

Re: Surly frames question

seems it's less about the frames and more about the wheel size ? the only downside to the LHT I can see, if you're more into off-road, is the lower BB height. this means you sometimes clank the pedal off a rock, but it's once in a blue moon. real nit-picking. as Brucey says, it's all about compromis...

Re: Surly frames question

how off-road can you get a LHT 700c ? this much : surly.jpg 36 spoke Mavic wheels and 32 mm tyres, plus careful riding. http://active.visitscotland.com/findroute/highlands/Corrieyairack-Pass/ explains the route (what's under the snow): Main Region: The Highlands of Scotland Distance: 24 miles Diffic...

Re: Ortlieb dry bags

Bear in mind that when I say "will it smell" I mean "will it smell any worse than its occupants will after a week of cycle touring" - I'm more worried about damage to the tent than the smell itself. It probably won't actually grow anything on it if it's pitched every night, will...
