Re: Bar bags

ortlieb hinge is at the front. don't know why, but it means I can open it while cycling and the contents are protected from the wind/rain as I rummage around inside.

ortlieb works, by the way.

Re: A piece of advice for foreign cyclists

you can fill your bottles from the tap (hotel, hostal, campsite, etc), or ask them to be filled (if you stop at a cafe, bar or somewhere).

Re: Working while cycle touring

hi, wearing a backpack is out, not a good idea. plenty of general touring advice on that has already been given on this forum, have a quick search. it's good to have everything simple and easy. just work when you feel like working, and don't stress about it. I found that the times I felt like workin...

Re: Working while cycle touring

Hi I've worked and cycle toured, 4 months at a time as a freelance database consultant. I was working for some large companies, but mostly remotely; from the tent. I thoroughly recommend it, if you can get it to work for you. regarding the laptop. I have a macbook pro, a macbook air and also a 10&qu...

Re: Barcelona, Pyrenees in May - advice please

oh yeah, and, Ripoll to Sant Joan de les Abadesses (at least) has a very good cycle path; the old railway line now a tarmac cycle/walking path). lastly, there's lots of 12th century 'stuff' in this area, so you might want to swot up on that time period and things might make a bit more sense when you...

Re: Barcelona, Pyrenees in May - advice please

well it was baking hot every day, except today which was a bit cloudy (13 degrees); shorts and t-shirt did just fine. however, as people are indicating it depends on your abilities to deal with weather. obviously mountain areas are changeable, and generally chilly first thing in the morning and duri...

Re: Barcelona, Pyrenees in May - advice please

I cycled Barcelona/Edinburgh around May last year (return leg), and it was probably 25 plus some days. I skirted the Pyrenees, but the weather there was warm and sunny with occasional low cloud. I flew over the mountains last week, and there was hardly any snow left (on the plane route). this week i...

Re: Calais - Dover, book or not?

you need the booking reference and sometimes the card you booked it with, though it would be better to call them before leaving to ask. if I remember correctly, the campsite in Calais town (by the old tower) is €10/night, so it would still be cheaper to turn and at Calais and book it for the followi...

Re: Calais - Dover, book or not?

or could be 59.50 if you miss your boat. you can also book online a few days before, while you're on your way to Calais. which maintains spontaneity, and reduces cost.

Re: Hydraulic disc brakes mysteriously locked up

I've had this on a motorbike (which had been pushed over) before. the brake lever had been nudged a little, and was effectively 'slightly on'. so the pads rubbed the disc, heated the fluid and caused the brakes to lock solid. is it possible that a pad was seized to the disc maybe, even just rubbing ...

you can just turn up, so you don't need to book; although it's more expensive.

(cardboard) bike box in barcelona

Hi,

I brought my bike over to Barcelona this weekend (one way), so I have a cardboard bike box in my apartment. if anyone wants it over the next month or so to return home after a tour you're welcome to it, I can keep it for a while. Let me know.

cheers,
Doug

Re: West to East across North Spain

the pilgrim route is El Camino de Santiago, loosely from Le Puy to Santiago de Compestella. It doesn't run near the coast, as you say. have a search for Paradors de Turismo, you might find a nice/unique place to stay along the way. it can be hard to pick up on local events, other than stumbling acro...

Re: Perpignan to Roses

hi, the main route (non peage) from Perpignan south is pretty nasty, as it's heavy with traffic and trucks; this is the route via Boulou/La Jonquera. the route south via the coast is really nice though. the Pyrenees stop well west of Perpignan, and you won't be going 'over' the Pyrenees. It's just c...
