Possible first foray into tubs
My road bike came with aksiums which I had always intended to replace with tub wheels and something nice may have just popped up. I can get a Shimano Dura Ace R9170 Carbon Disc Rear Wheel (tubular) 40mm for £650 but have a bunch of stuff I don't know enough about :
1) The wheel has a Ti freehub. What's the durability like compared to Al and (presumably high carbon) steel ?
2) Says it's for an e-through axle, which isn't included. Can I just use it with the 142x12 axle I have ? The dropouts on the rear are 12.76mm thick. Do I need to buy a new axle and will it work with my dropouts ?
3) Anyone know what shape/size the nipple heads are for this ?
4) Is the valve extension included with either the wheel or the tyre ?
5) If I get it, do I want to get a big bottle of glue or just a tube, what's the shelf life ?
6) Is this likely to be on offer because of the new 12s shimano stuff and is it a good deal ?
7) Is the load on the bearings determined by the torque on the axle (which ever one)?
8 ) These wheels are absurdly light, 774g for the rear but there's a lot of stuff around saying they're fine for a hevy rider, anyone got any experience of this ?
One of the reasons I wanted to switch to tubs was higher pressures. I'm sticking with the max from the tyre at the moment (GP5000 clinchers 123PSI) but some of my reading today seems to indicate that I could get away with a lot more. Are disc rims generally stronger or weaker in this regard ? What's everyone else managing ?
Cheers,
Bruce.

Re: What do worn SPD-SL cleats feel like ?
I think this may have to do with the shoes, I just switch form winter to summer ones and the winter ones are much stiffer.

I looked at SJS, they have the dura ace stuff but at £16 a pop it's not worth it. Madison is pure B2B presumably.

Just had a look on aliexpress and they seem to have some. Not the ones I want unfortunately. Wonder if there are some other Chinese sellers doing this ?

What do worn SPD-SL cleats feel like ?
One of my feet has been feeling like it is unsupported on the outside (sort of rolling outwards) for a while and yesterday I got in a big torque dig and it got worse. Everything seems to be in tact and cleats are on tight. They are kinda high millage. What sort of millage can I expect from these cleats and what symptoms do they exhibit when they are worn ?

Sourcing Shimano PTFE chain lube
Finally found a chain lube I'm happy with and it seems to be out of stock everywhere. I'm down to the graphite sludge and everything's going black. Has this been discontinued ? I got the impression shimano were pushing a two part chain lube last time I looked for some. Anyone know where to get some in the UK ?

I've got one lazy upshift from the 14th to 15th sprocket and want to look into sourcing single sprockets in the UK cos of the price of cassettes at the moment. I'm guessing it's the 15 I want to replace. I know https://www.bike24.com/p2177354.html are doing the for £5 a pop so is there anyone in the UK doing this ? They don't ship to the UK. I could get years out of the bigger sprockets and I'm guessing they're more expensive than the ones that wear out anyway.

skinny nut drivers alternative to Park tools SW-15
Hi, I've got an aksium that need fettling but none of my sockets will fit in the rim holes. I'm aware of the above tool but figure I could probably get a set of small nut drivers for the same sort of money which I could do with for other stuff. Anyone know of any that would fit in the hole ? I need smaller ones for modelling stuff. Is the nut on the aksium 5 or 5.5mm?

Don't worry, I always clamp the seat post.

Don't know the composite term "vaunted failure", is this an engineering term ? I'll just keep an eye on it and hope nothing more serious develops.Marcus Aurelius wrote: It’s very unlikely to see the vaunted failure, unexpectedly, and with no warning.

Re: Crack or scratch ?
I had a good look at it, probably just a scratch, think it may be carbon paranoia, just the location set alarm bells ringing. Out of curiosity, if the top tube were to fail, is it likely the down tube would take the weight whilst bringing the bike to a stop ? Many of the pictures of broken carbon frames I've seen - when the front triangle breaks - show both the top and down tubes broken about half way along.

Re: Crack or scratch ?
In the middle of a rounded triangular carbon top tube on a Questionable ribble R872 (https://forum.cyclinguk.org/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=133131&p=1403870#p1403870). If it were a scratch, I guess this is were it would likely be but I heard a little crack yesterday and got paranoid cos the bike is a known lemon. If they can't get their angles right - who knows how bad they could screw up the layup?
