Re: New COVID rules

Ian,
I know where to look. I am booked twice each month for a few nights at a time. Various sites all of which are located on Farms. Only facility is a Tap for water and usually a Compost type of toilet.
I keep clean using Biodegradable wipes and as the person I am -I love Nature and the outdoors- so no companions to to 'worry' about.
I take deodorant etc but all is a back to Nature style camping experience. Woodlands, streams etc.
Following a number of years with no breaks at all due to health- I am hoping for the best.
I agree that your surmise about costs could be higher. I am fortunate that I do not require all the razmataz that Summer Family camping brings.
To test your theory I checked a couple of sites that I used when living in Dorset. The costs for one person in a small tent in the Lyme Regis area this year are horrendous!

Re: New COVID rules

Ian,
All the sites I endeavoured to book, refused tent camping until 17th May.
All sites contacted told me nobody was allowed to use mixed facilities.
I have just a moment ago called a site again. The site now tells me opening for tent camping was optional and that all facilities used must be cleaned Covid style following use by someone. This would have been time consuming and obviously costly.
It appears (to me) that sites apparently 'banded' together and virtually all decided not to allow anyone in any type of vehicle or tent. There has been a small number who decided to interpret their own way. Thus why some sites were open. There are sites not opening at all this year due to toilet cleaning regulations. Take for instance Camping in the Forest sites. A very popular site called 'Roundhills' in New Forest is staying closed!
So I apologise for any error, but believe that the way forward is to keep things opening slowly.
I also believe that the closed to tents sites were instructing visitors to use their own toilets.
Anyway-it is all over bar the shouting-next Monday. I hope!

I’m sorry, but that is not correct.

This is the current guidance on shared toilet facilities, quoted from Gov.uk.

https://www.gov.uk/guidance/working-saf ... on#sec-2-2

Bathrooms

Shared toilet facilities are permitted, and clear signage should be provided on how to use shared toilets in line with social distancing and social contact rules.
Shared shower facilities are permitted but should only be used where social distancing can be managed. All possible steps should be taken to minimise household mixing and reduce the risk of transmission. Where possible, this should include assigning shared shower facilities to one permitted group of 6 people or 2 households/bubbles (i.e. making them private) or running a reservation-and-clean rota (whereby one permitted group of 6 people or 2 households/bubbles can exclusively book the shared facilities for a fixed time, and the facilities are cleaned thoroughly between reservations). Where it is not possible to manage social distancing and minimise household mixing, shared shower facilities should remain closed.
Where showers and toilets are shared, clear use and cleaning guidance should be set to ensure they are kept clean and clear of personal items, and that social distancing is managed.

If you feel the above is wrong, please quote the source of your info.

Go on then. You have an attentive audience.

Good use of quotes in 'Wild' Camping. Doesn't sound very 'Wild' to me ...

p.s. I guarantee the rules will change before you make your final trip. Make sure you check the updates!
I can no longer actually go Wild Camping. I have pretty serious health problems and need to be reasonably close to an address. I may require Ambulance.
I used to camp on Dartmoor and some other wild places but as said above can no longer.
Your sarcastic comment is not really required. I trust that you are well and that you never end up as I am.
I seriously do hope that generally our lives can get back to a realistic 'normal'.

I have not been able to have any holiday or trip to anywhere for 6 years! I have been in and out of Hospital. I hope that I can do what I am able to do this year.

It is not possible to tent camp unless one uses one's own toilet-such as a Portaloo in a toilet tent.

From 17th Hey ho away we go....Hurrah.

I called-I internet searched-I spent hours on this. No self respecting decent law abiding site is allowing tents unless thus equipped.
No No No!

Clear and to the point.
That’s me told. Blimey.
In which case the bicycle in question is not as we know it-a Touring bike. It is a bicycle which is used by the OP as a bicycle to tour on! A clear difference.

No you are not!!

I use Gatorskins in sizes 28-32 and have done for many years. I have recently fitted Grand Prix 28mm to a recent as yet unridden build.
Schwalbe Marathon are very tough no matter what size (in my opinion from previous use).

Re: Views on/experience of this tent

andrew_s wrote: 6 May 2021, 1:01am That wasn't there before.

So not only is it the same overall design as an Akto, it's pretty much the same size too.
Seems quite decent value to me (Akto user)

Compared with other single person tents, the sleeping area, whilst not cramped, definitely won't allow another person, and the porch area is relatively generous, so you can get 4 panniers in and still leave the door unobstructed or have somewhere to cook.

"Tested to force 8" is about 40 mph, which is as much as most people would want to camp in, though there's a difference between putting a tent up in 40 mph, and an already up tent not blowing down in 40 mph.
The Akto will reputedly do 80 mph (there are some nutters who like to go out and test how strong their tents are).
eg https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x2r4dys
I used to cycle camp using a Brompton. I used to go a fair distance (30-40 miles) loaded front and rear. I always used a Hilleberg Akto because of the ability to put the Brompton inside (left of the porch when viewed from the front) and be able to store bags etc plus cooking in the porch early morning.
So if the tent being discussed is almost the same size, then I can heartily recommend. The only one thing I could not deal with (eventually) was space or rather lack of in the sleeping area. Getting dressed or undressed whilst laying on a sleeping mat was difficult (I do have a bad back)....

Indeed it is certainly worth joining for a 12 month period. Get a little magazine and a list of Farm pitches and Long distance paths.

Well, in answer. I was in the Club for Farm pitches only. Magazine too.

Older much more ingrained in the Club-rule-the roost. Mention a new Hilleberg or such plus a Titanium stove and it is ignored in the main by others. (Unlike bicycle riders!)
All (most) get togethers are in the North. attended by hard and fast walkers. Cyclists get a mention from time to time.
Obviously you have never been to their AGM or one of the larger meets. If you had you would have seen Hilleberg Aktos in abundance and many using titanium stoves. I would say at the Bath Racecourse AGM there were at least 15 cycle campers in addition to the walking backpackers.
Indeed I am aware of the prolific use of Akto tents recommended by Chris Townsend. But other than that the Members I have actually met whilst camping have been very much in the 'fuddy duddy range'. I hope this does not include you!
I have not been to an AGM because it is always too far for me to travel.
I did attend Bath for a half a day.
I am really trying to express myself as a former member (left this year actually) that has found in my own experience that the Club is not worth the bother. Others obviously have differing opinions.
Thank you for your input.

A fair few mostly Northern with some South areas. Facilities usually a Toilet (or bucket),,,,, Remember these are Farm yard types.
