Re: Rhine Cycle Route

My partner and I cycled the rhine last year. We're going back this year to enjoy the Ahr and Moselle as part of a big loop. If you live in East Anglia, or London, you can get return tickets from your local train station (ours is Cambridge) to *any* station in Holland, via the ferry. We went to Heerlen, about 15miles from Aachen (in Germany). I recommend the overnight ferry so you have the day to get across holland via train (you won't need it- you'll be at the dutch/german border a little after lunch). A days cycle to Cologne, a day to Koblenz, a day down the Gorge to Bacharach ( look at the Youth Hostel, Castle Stahlehk - You'll understand why) and a day to Mainz where we visited friends. Then back to Aachen (with a day stopover there in the hot springs). Finally train from Heerlen back to Hook of Holland and Cambridge. Two weeks, very inexpensive and absolutely lovely.

The rail/ferry ticket is the dutch flyer. The staying places were youth hostels but when I say youth hostels I have to point out that they included two german castles, very beautiful.

The 'halo' of doing it all sustainably is very undeserved as it was the best holiday we've ever taken.
