Re: What is a constitution?

Our overall direction of the country has been set by the last referendum. If we do have another one I'd be quite happy for the two thirds rule to apply in order that the result is allowed to have any effect on changing that direction. By that thinking surely the direction was set by the first refer...

Re: MPs talking the talk - Brilliant

In the forty or so years that I have been taking an interest in cycling matters, committee after commission after report after policy document have looked at the subject and come to the conclusion that investing in cycling makes excellent sense. The logic is inescapable, and yet nothing happens. It ...

And still practicing cannibalism until very recently. I would imagine that the diversity of languages and the isolation of different tribes mean that there is a great diversity of cultures too. I don't know, but it would seem probable that you are making a sweeping generalisation. A disease called ...

Re: canvas tents

I still have all my cotton and cotton inner/nylon flysheet tents. The reason I don't use them is that they are no longer functional. I also have a working Vango Mark 2 which has been rudely pushed aside by my Robens due to its porch area. Ideally I would like a cotton inner Robens - now that's luxu...

Where is Third Crank?

Does anybody know why Third Crank is no longer posting? I miss his informative, sensible posts.

Re: canvas tents

Just wondering anyone stll here an old fashioned canvas/cotton type ridge tent, maybe if they are camping with their car? I remember the Black's Icelandics we used in the Scouts. Fine tents but you might need a biggish car. I used to use a Tinker , also by Blacks. An idiosyncratic shape, a little l...

*Jared* Diamond, do you mean? (seems to know everything, one could suspect JD is not an individual but a committee of experts) JD and his like are one reason why I Love America Me too. I have read several of his books. They are full of unusual ideas and insights. Guns, Germs and Steel begins with a...

I bought one and could not get on with it. Some years later I dug it out and tried again. With not too much effort I got the hang of it.

Re: Mirror + bar-end shifters

As I couldn’t get my mirror to fit I bought one of those spec mounted rear view jobbies. It was awful, I just couldn’t get my head in the right place to see what was going on behind me, possibly not helped by the fact that I wear varifocals, and ditched it after my first ride with it. I am slowly g...

Re: Mirror + bar-end shifters

I wouldn't use one of these - too much risk of eye injury if taking a tumble or even bumping into a doorway or something while I get off the bike. Presumably you eschew spectacles too? They are much closer to your eyes. Plastic mirrors are available, which cannot be more "dangerous" than ...

Re: Mirror + bar-end shifters

I used to take the attitude that if you wanted to see what was behind you should look behind. You would need to be looking around most of the time (so I'm glad you're seen the light!). I don't feel the need to look round most of the time, or glance in the mirror. If I want to change my line it is n...
