Re: Oban to Fort William

You could go via Lismore by taking the calmac ferry from Oban to Lismore then the local authority ferry from Lismore to Port Appin this would cut out a large chunk of the A 828 joining it near Castle Stalker. Your stuck with this I think until Balahulish from there go to Corran cross by the ferry an...

Re: New forks for my bike required

I had this problem found Axiom Odessee Suspension front pannier rack from Chain Reaction cycles on line £26.66 these would be an easy alternative. Thorn cycles do forks to convert hardtails to tourers a dearer option though £99 you would still need to check if these were suitable for your bike. Dont...

Early June no accommodation booked

What is it like to get accommodation on route early June with nothing booked. I do not want a rigid plan but would pick up accommodation or camp would on route for flexibility daily distance around 70mls average. I am thinking of a west coast route through Wales Glasgow or through Arran to oban and ...

Re: Are there any 16" touring bikes?

How about the Dawes Vantage comes in 43cm size I think its very new to the market not seen it before today but it looks like the Auminium framed version of the Horizon from a couple of years back under another name.

Re: what bike

The bike you would be best with would be a bike that is reasonably fast on the road comfortable can carry a luggage and plenty of gears. Thats a touring bike, your budget is not going to stretch to new one most are now well north of 1K the cheapest are around £500 but you might be lucky to get one o...

Re: Going from a mountain bike to a tourer...

Hi I have 2 bikes one is an old steel MTB the other is an 05 Dawes horizon which is very similar to the EBC Traveller, at the time I bought mine it was a bit of badge engineering as far as the EBC bike was concerned. The handling is the big difference, the handle bars on the EBC bike are a bit narrr...

Re: Scottish Western Isles tour - any suggestions?

Do you mean the Westen risles from Barra to Lewis or the west coast in general? If you are starting from glasgow you could try Glasgow to Ardrossan , take the ferry to Arran, Broadford on arran to Lochranza, Short Ferry from Lochranza to Cloaniag on the Kintyre peninsula, Cloanaig to Kennacraig to c...

Re: Road Bike Size Advice

I am of similar size to yourself I also have been considering a new 700c bike I currently have a Dawes Horizon 43cm with 700c wheels. I was considering getting a light weight tourer as an upgrade however the kind of difficulties you are experiencing have put me off so Im just going to get thinner ti...

Re: Tyres for 17mm rims

To be fair, it might be too narrow if you weighed a lot, and were going to have front and back panniers plus a rack top bag, on something rough like a Sustrans trail. I have ridden my fixed-wheel bike (on 23mm slicks) on a few unpaved surfaces around Edinburgh and the Lothians (with at least a 10kg...

Re: Tyres for 17mm rims

Thanks for the replies this confirms what I had suspected I was told by a local bike shop that 28mm would be too narrow for a touring bike, I thought that was rubbish. i think I will give it a try now although I am not certain about the Marathons yet but puncture resistance will be high on the list ...

Tyres for 17mm rims

I have a Dawes Horizon fitted with 37mm tyres fitted to 700c 17mm wide rims I wish to fit narrower tyres to get a bit more speed out of it. I think in theory I should be able to fit 28mm tyres I intend to use the bike unloaded and forB & B touring carrying maybe up to about 10kg. I was thinking ...
