Re: Hiring bikes abroad - poss. Majorca
Hopefully going about end of April. We have been to Majorca before, once cycled clockwise round the island and the next time anti-clockwise, moving on each night. Also stayed near Arenal and then again in the north of the island, the name escapes me at the moment. This time hoping to stay in one place and hire bikes. It is the Alcudia area we are thinking of.

Hiring bikes abroad - poss. Majorca
Has anyone managed to hire decent road bikes for a few days cycling possibly Majorca. We fancy a week or so cycling in the sun but find it quite a hassle to take the bikes on planes recently. I don't know if there are any hotels that do hire bikes as a package, or we need to find decent shops with good road bikes. We are quite open minded where we go at the moment. Any helpful suggestions would be welcome.

Re: Megabus to France
Thank you for that link. Very interesting. I hadn't taken notice of that before, didn't hear about Megabus until earlier this week.
Bit concerned about two of us travelling. Would be a disaster if they only had room for one bike!!!

Megabus to France
Has anyone tried taking a complete bike to France on Megabus. Any problems etc? We normally use the Bike bus but from Shropshire it is quite a way to pick up the coach in the first place. We've had problems with the bikes when flying and don't wish to drive to the south of France.

Re: Narbonne area.
Thank you for that. We have travelled on the Bike bus on numerous occasions and know the pitfalls. We do feel it is one way of getting the bikes to the south of France without too much hassle though. The last few journeys we have stayed at the Hotel in Roses which does suit us both, but thought we would like a change this year.

Narbonne area.
Does anyone know of a cyclist friendly place within 15 - 20 miles of Narbonne. We are planning going on the Bike bus and would like a place to stay for say a week and to go out every day from there, and then possibly moving on to a different place for the second week.
My wife is not now a strong cyclist so we are not going to move on every day this year we have done previously. We have already stayed at Les Volets Bleus. We would prefer a place that does breakfast and evening meal.

Llandudno guest house
Anyone know of a Cyclist Friendly guest house in Llandudno. We need safe, covered bike storage over night. Most hotels/guest houses don't have parking space or even bike space. (we don't need car parking)

Folding bike
I have a daughter who lives in a flat in Chester. Has no where to keep a conventional bike, but has a spare room (up a flight of stairs) where she could put a folding bike.
Which bike is easy to fold/unfold etc. Not too expensive. she will not be doing long touring miles, just local rides.
I have been cycling for over 65 years but have no experience of these.

Re: Youth hostelling in late 40s early 50s
Thanks everyone for your comments, makes interesting reading. It seems there is no one out there who is old enough to answer my main query - what did we eat when self cooking in the late 40s early 50s. This was while food was still rationed.

Re: Youth hostelling in late 40s early 50s
Yes, it was the days of a good network of youth hostels where you had to arrive "by your own steam".
No big car parks full of coaches (and cars).
Thinking back we must have had fried potatoes and baked beans for supper.

Youth hostelling in late 40s early 50s
Watching a tv programme the other evening on food in the 50s made my wife ask me what I took when hostelling in the late 40s early 50s as I had told her I always self cooked. I cannot remember. I know most things were rationed so how did we get on? Anyone out there old, like me, and can help me to recall this. My first hostel was in 1946.

Re: Canal towpaths
So far it seems K & A is the favourite. Scotland a bit too far. We live in S. Shropshire and think we would like to travel with bikes by train otherwise if we take a car it means parking it somewhere then re-tracing our journey to get back to it. All in the pipe line at the moment.
I think we would do it mid-week rather than the busy times at weekends.
Thanks everyone for their help.

Canal towpaths
My wife and I have cycled on canal towpaths in France, but are thinking this year of sticking to Gt. Britain, mainly England and Wales.
Any suggestions as to rideable towpaths for say 100 miles or so, we would also need to pick up B&B en route.
My wife's favourite idea at the moment is the Kennet & Avon.
