I suspect my click torque wrench is wrong because I just stripped the thread on my SA3 bike's left hand wheel nut.
Am I correct in thinking the torque in Nm is roughly the weight in kg hanging on the handle times ten times the length of the handle between nut centre axis and weight application in metres?
If so, it's way off, like triple, and time for a new wrench.

Torque wrench
After 2/3 years riding a carrera virtuosa, I updated 6 months ago to a second hand 2013 defy 1. A number of the nuts are marked with a torque reference (e.g handlebar stem and adjustable expansion 5nm and 10nm)
Should I invest in a torque wrench ? In the absence of other marked torque references, do I need worry about tightening ? I have to date just 'tightened' with a multitool.
Where would I find the information as to what torque ?
Any recommendations as to purchase ? I have read other threads about Aldi, but am thinking of eBay or Screwfix.

Just bought this 'inexpensive' Torque Wrench
Folks,
Just in case you may find this useful I've just bought one of these...........(Machine mart Product Code: 040210674 - if my link fails)
http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/produ ... /040210674
It does 5-25nm, feels fairly solid and is pleasant to use, reversible, but I have no idea if it 'clicks' on reverse drive as yet.
I can't vouch for accuracy, but it has to at least be 'consistently inaccurate' - which must be better than me swinging on a lever and guessing
At £20.39 seems like fairly good value for the casual home user.

Torque wrench or digital balance ?
I'm starting to take bicycle maintenance seriously and have bought a workstand and am about to get some storage / work bench.
Having just opted for disc brakes I am aware that there are an increasing number of critical screws on my bike that warrant regular checks and more precise tightening than my second-hand pointer-type wrench can possibly allow.
Since I am about to order a digital balance to weigh luggage etc, I was wondering if modifying a standard wrench handle and calculating the reading for each screw on my bike was any less accurate than a cheapish torque wrench - e.g. the Cyclo at about £40 that is unlikely ever to be calibrated...

Torque wrench - is it necessary ?
Started doing a lot of my own maintenance on my hybrid, since acquiring some knowledge via various books, Zinn & the art of mtb maintenance etc. They go into the danger of over tightening/under tightening various components, and how using a torque wrench, means you get it more accurate. Is there any way around this ? I mean I guess if your experienced you get a feel for how tight things should be, but how does one start out ? Any ideas appreciated.

Ball-mounted towbar bike rack - no torque wrench
I've just got a ball-mounted towbar bike rack from Pendle. It takes up to three bikes and goes on the towbar ball (it doesn't require straps to hold the rack back to the tailgate - it just sits on the ball).
The fitting instructions say a 17mm spanner and torque wrench are required, and the final torque setting is 59Nm. I have the spanner but no torque wrench, so I went to buy one. The only one available at the shop - a tool specialist - was over £70 and needs a socket set, and I don't have that either. In any case I doubt if there's room to use a socket between the fitting and the rear bumper. So I didn't buy the torque wrench.
Is there a different type of torque wrench I could use? I presume I really do need one for this.
