Overnighted on Scourie (a very expensive place to stay!) And then got the Northbus back to Lairg this morning to catch the train to Inverness. And then, all points south.
Sounds great! What is the Northbus please? I can’t find a link for it. It presumably took your bike as well?
Thanks

A set of Easy-out screw extractors doesn't cost much but is useful to have around just in case.

Re: Do Dutch Cyclists Jump Traffic Lights?

In my experience they ignore pedestrian crossing lights though. A few years ago we were trying to get to the station in Amsterdam but couldn’t get across the busy cycle path in front of it. There was a constant stream of bikes going quite fast, and although we brought up the red light several times they continued to sail through. I thought we were going to miss our flight home.

I badly need new shoes to use with toeclips and eagerly followed your Hi-tec link - but white in the rainy west of Scotland is not an option. 🙁

Well, pot calling kettle black is quite common, isn’t it?

No matter - I wish MickF well and hope he’ll return eventually.

That looks much better - well spotted! I thought that service had been dropped for good some years ago.

Re: how to return to the start of the great north trail

Don't ask me! They describe it as more like a taxi service, and you pay a flat rate for the vehicle.

Some years ago they had a minibus with a dedicated trailer that could take several bikes - I used it once to get back to Inverness from Lochinver, and the price was very reasonable. Our bikes were slightly damaged though because the supporting metal uprights had a very rough finish, which ground significant dents into the pedal arms.

How many are "we", and how many bikes? The Durness Bike Bus offers a service to Inverness but it is quite expensive unless you can share the cost among several people. The nearest train station from Durness is about 75 miles away in Thurso - you should have a following wind but traffic could be high in the peak tourist season.

Or they could just visit https://www.cycle-endtoend.org.uk/, managed by one of our forum members (rjb) and linked in the sticky at the top this board. It's a huge resource and is regularly updated.

simonineaston wrote: 23 Feb 2022, 8:49pm So I was delighted when I learnt from the guy in the sorting office that you can buy postage online, then take a QR code, with the address details etc embedded in it, to the sorting office and drop the packet off. They'll scan the QR code, print the resulting label on their own printer, complete with its full ink cartiridges, stick it on your parcel and That's A Bingo - off goes the parcel. Hooray.
Only useful if you live close to a sorting office, though - an ordinary post office can’t do it.
