Re: Buying a new stem

You need to get your saddle position right first - see 531colin’s bike fitting article linked above.

Re: Cycling UK kit

Indeed - in any case, can you imagine a goat-flavoured fruit cake? 🤮

Re: Cycling UK kit

Imagine riding around with “Stolen Goat” emblazoned on your jersey - IME it’s nearly as bad as FLAB (Fat lad at the back) 😲

Re: Reporting uninsured, untaxed, no MOT driver

Does anyone know what the required 70-75% light transmission means in practice? Cyclists are regularly advised to make eye contact with the driver, yet I find increasingly often that I cannot see the driver well enough to do so. When I'm walking down my street I even blank the neighbours sometimes when I would otherwise wave, because I can't see who the driver is and their cars are so similar.

Re: Cobbled Roads - Why?

Aren't setts harder wearing than tarmac? I'm sure I remember alpine passes often having tarmac on the straight bits but pavé on the hairpins? (I'm thinking of the 1960s-70s.)

Maybe it was now too heavy to fly off the gate post!

Re: Gilles Berthoud Rohloff Shifter - drops

I have a standard Rohloff shifter mounted on flat bars with Origin 8 drop bar ends, like this:

It looks a bit industrial but works well.

Re: Covid Booster. Yes/No?

We had our boosters and flu jags 10 days ago. We both felt a little fragile the next day but that could have been caused by being kept awake by gales and torrential rain in the night. Arms felt a bit sore at first but steadily improved and back to normal after a few days. :)

Vorpal wrote: 11 Oct 2021, 2:08pm I've read that there is no scientific evidence to support the efficacy of dock leaves for nettle stings, and they do nothing for me, but my daughter, who is rather more bothered by nettles than I, is also helped very much by dock. She will get large, red, swollen splotches from nettles, but they go down immediately when dock is applied (crushed leaves, rubbed on the area). Even anti-histamine isn't as effective, as that takes a while to work, and she still sometimes experiences itching for a few hours.
As children we used to split the stem of the dock and use the sap. It was much more effective than the "sting relief" cream available at the time. These days I'm better at avoiding nettles! :D

Re: Seatpost slipping

Some suggestions on this thread here. They include carbon paste, toothpaste, a jubilee clip on the actual post, seatpost lock ring, or in my own case a clamp made from part of a rear light bracket.

axel_knutt wrote: 2 Nov 2021, 5:37pm I have an Olympus voice recorder which had about 20 files on it at the GMT change, and after changing the clock on it I noticed that the time on all the files changed too. So I decided to change the clock back again whilst I copied the files onto the computer with the correct times on. The problem is that they didn't revert back again, it seems that there is now a permanent one hour error on all the file creation times. I'm not well pleased, because if I need the recordings at all it's likely to be for legal reasons.
Try copying them again after the clocks go on again in spring? Won’t the dates be wrong in any case?

Re: Can I replace 37-622 tires with 28-622?

Our first tandem, from the 1940s or 50s, had Westwood rims and cable-operated SA hub brakes by the time we got it in the early 70s. They weren’t very good as the oil from the hubs gradually leaked onto the braking surfaces.
