Good post.

And if the Sun was a football, Jupiter would be a pea ten miles away.

We take a lot for granted. In A Short History of Nearly Everything Bill Bryson describes a valley in what is now Kenya, where our ancestors manufactured axe heads from the rock of a mountain at the end of the valley. The work of this ancient factory continued unchanged for two million years. Were they happy? Did they crack jokes? How can nothing change for two million years?

Actually if you click the link below you will see that if the Sun was 2.4m in diameter Jupiter would be 242mm and just over a mile away from the Sun and Pluto is 5.9mm just over 6 miles away.

If I'm not mistaken every accident I've read about that involves a cyclist of any kind always says.
"The cyclist collided with the car".
Making it sound like the cyclist is at fault, never the other way round.

Re: What have you forgotten to take?

Only yesterday I forgot to make sure my lights where in my bag for riding home at 10pm.

I worked early shift on Friday, put lights in fleece pocket. As the weather is so nice I didn't take fleece = no lights. I got a lift home and will get a lift back to work today.

Previously I've locked my mtb (years ago) outside a pub with no keys had to get a lift home and went back the next day to get it.

Even further back (even more years ago) I've gone windsurfing with everything except the mast.

I'm sure a lot of drivers see us as an obstacle that their ego says they must pass what ever the consequences.

I'd love to join you all on these rides but it's a bit far from Plymouth. Especially on a limited budget.

Re: National Express coach from Inverness after Lejog?

I did it last year, cost me £81.

As we had a camper as a support vehicle I took far more than I needed  so I sent all my camping gear(not enough bed space in the camper) home by UPS and still had a trailer full of clobber. The driver at Inverness put the fear of god in me by saying that he doesn't think I'll get on at Glasgow bus change due to luggage space. I spent the entire trip from Inverness to Glasgow worrying what to do if I couldn't get on.

The driver from Glasgow asked where I was going. "Plymouth" was my answer so he wrote "PLYM" on the bike bag and said "put it in the back" then on the the bus with no worries. I think total travel time was 25 hours. Left Inverness at 18.30 arrived in Plymouth 19.30 I think.

BTW. The trike is technically a folding bike so by Nat Express own admissions is allowed.

Re: Chopper JOGLE companions please?

Hi Mick.
I'd would have liked to join you at Okehampton on the Saturday as it's the first day of a week off. Then I remembered what I have planned, I have a week to strip, respray and rebuild my trike to go back to work on the 7th June.

Hi Mick
If you can ride your Chopper up Gunny Hill to the Rifle Volunteer in St Ann's Chapel then you should be Ok doing Berridale. According to Google Earth Gunny Hill is bigger than both sides of Berridale.

Re: ICE Trice - Chain falls off

Yes I've had the problem and solved it on both mine and my brothers trike.

As you said the problem is when reversing the chain tube pulls the chain towards the middle of the trike working in the same way that the dérailleur works when going forward but there are no screws to limit this movement.

The way I solved this is by replacing the bolt that holds the "P" clip for the return tube under the main pulley with a 50mm bolt and 3 nuts. The first nut on the bolt goes right up to the bracket to hold the bolt square. The next bolt goes far enough down the bolt to allow room for washer, "P" clip, washer and nut. Doing this should put the chain line on the outside of the pulley therefore centring the chain on the middle ring. Since doing this I've not had the chain fall off.

I'll take a picture of it tomorrow to show you what I mean.

Take the wheels off and put it in a bike bag, then it's normal luggage.

Re: Pallet to Wick?

I wish I could go with you Mick but I can't afford to do much in the way of cycling tours this year.

Having said that I am looking at cycling to the Isle of Wight and back for this years Randonee. Should work out at just over 400 miles in 5 days.
