On my Brompton I have to be careful not to get back pain if I haven't ridden it for a while. I think it's a matter of getting the muscles used to it again. Much prefer the riding position that dropped bars give.

No, I am quite happy with just a few cogs at the back. It's very rare that I feel the need for smaller gaps between gears even cycling the N. Yorks Moors on a 12 speed! I'm no racer of course, just out for a jolly.

Despite the up and downs experienced by the OP I too was pleased to read that so many still use UK framebuilders rather than buy the rather mundane(IMO) production-line imports.

Even better to hear Ellis Briggs praised as I have their audax model on order and expect it early 2009:D I've used them only for repairs before but the work was beyond critiscism (as was Mercians when I used them once). My other bike is a Roberts and that's excellent too but I thought I'd try a more local builder this time. Their choice of parts and pricing suits my needs and budget very nicely.
