Re: Tory leader - place your bets

Although it was the Blair government who finally paid off our WW2 debt to USA.
I suspect this lot want us in debt to them again.

Re: Lockerbie to Beattock

I’ve just had a rethink on that last section after turn off with bench mark.
It cuts out a hill and gets you passed all the timber and power plant. Gives you 100 yds back on B7076 before there is a separated cycle path on rhs.

Re: Tory leader - place your bets

Remember back in 2014 when nationalists used to warn that if we failed to vote for independence we could end up out of the European Union and governed by Boris Johnson?

It was presented as an unlikely doomsday scenario to counter the worst unionist catastrophising over the economic wasteland Scotland would be rendered should it dare to break away from the UK.

I’ve read he’s coming to Dundee to deliver a strengthen the union speech. I can see that being interesting :D

Re: Lockerbie to Beattock

OK my front room is 10 yards off the WCML Wamphray G F so mid point between Beattock and Lockerbie.
As already stated Beattock to Lockerbie is predominantly downhill.
The painted cycleway is without problem for a 9yo until Johnstonebridge The section Johnstonebridge to Lockerbie is busier because of Lorry park and so much transport dependent industry. The route i offer gives you views of the railway for 90% of the time and gives you only 1 mile on the busier section. The lorry park is a good stop for food and at the turn off route 74 one mile further on on that railway bridge there is a Bench Mark see if you can spot it.

That will still need it’s gps powering which needs some of your phone battery.
Lezyne mega xl gives 48 hours of use but it would cost you £150. You could buy a few power packs out of that and still have change. I bought one in LIDL this spring for £15 did me a weeks phone and cycle computer (lezyne super 20 hrs)

Plumby said,
Really unsure whether to take cycling trousers - it surprises me that people are saying it is that cold in August in Scotland. But you're the guys that have done it so will heed the advice.

It can be cold and like someone else said my comfort item is a down jacket. Light and packs small.

Re: Record attempt scheduled

These two guys had to pack today because one of the bikes became beyond repair. I rode with them the other day and they were beasts of bike their weight beyond lifting. They reached the Kinross area.

Redvee wrote:Two guys set off on Friday on an unofficial record attempt doing a leisurely 60-70 miles per day. The reason for the attempt being unofficial is that Guiness won't recognise their bikes cause the guys are doing the ride on tall bikes.

My neck of the woods today and I escorted them across Bristol, not helped by ER people on Bristol bridge:

Other than the unofficial record, the guys are also raising money for Changing Lives https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/tallbike

She's going to lose everything she has? I doubt it. She'll lose her local MEPs and that's about it, and if I'd asked her the name of those MEPs five years ago I'd be have been willing to bet she couldn't name them. She is obviously one of those apocalyptic Remainers with no sense of proportion or perspective.

It’s a shame you appear to judge people by your own limited knowledge. I can’t speak for that lady but personally I’ve always known my MEP https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alyn_Smith who has always done a good job of keeping me well informed with regular emails. I worked in an industry where a good knowledge of EU directives was an asset.

I am of the opinion that if one has a good sense of where you are - know where north is? - then getting lost is never a problem in fact at times can be quite rewarding. Are you any good at orienteering? If so, it can give you a great sense of comfort to know you can get yourself back to where you need to be.

Have a great trip. My Lejog starts in just over four weeks for 1,000 miles.

Ken.

I constantly view evidence on Strava tracks of people riding through my patch on an E2E not everyone has that sense.
Viewed a classic a few days ago of lady doing a 30-40 ml /day. LEJOG. She got to Carlisle and went via Longtown to arrive at Gretna. A common thing before the Mway opened. Getting to Gretna she turned left and headed back to Carlilse on the road she should have taken out of Carlisle. After 2 mls she stopped presumably to check her map, turned around and after 4 unnecessary miles got back on track.
