Just ordered a couple of Marathon Winters for 14.99 each. Bargain - thanks for the heads up.

I think the term "tool free" refers to fitting them, not getting them off again. Marketing speak!

Re: It me or do SUVs alway drive to close

I find it strange that cyclists are so biased towards certain makes and types of car. I suspect they may be a certain amount of exclusivity creeping in. Where I live, there are any amount of BMWs, Audis, Mercs etc and well as 4x4s of all types. I imaging that in some areas of the country they are less common. This may lead to people noticing them more. I notice that there is a distinct lack of evidence on this thread to back up peoples perceptions. However, I would like to point out that I am a cyclist, have 5 bikes and also drive a 4x4, and it is a BMW! What does that make me? A murdering mania one minute and a complaining cyclist the next? I don't think so. I like to think that I am a courteous road user no matter which mode of transport I am using.

I'll choose to disagree if I may in that the functional difference between a car satnav and a bicycle GPS is significant enough NOT to consider them the same in all but the simplest terms. Any new entrant into the field of considering/choosing/buying their first bicycle GPS should look to understand the differences if a wrong/fruitless/frustrating purchase is to be avoided.

A car "satnav" is only called that because that is what the industry called it as an abbreviation of "satellite navigation". The Back in the 80s I had "satnav" on my ships albeit using the old system with satellites in polar orbit. We called it "satnav" but it did not find us a route from A to B following the roads. It was merely a system for obtaining a position from satellites.

Modern units use the Global Positioning System consisting of a larger number of geostationary satellites, with European and Russian constellations also getting a look in. However, whether you have a car specific unit or one designed for outdoor or bicycle use, they are essentially the same thing with different software on board and a different form factor (they look different)

2 Be wary of putting your home in your satnav/GPS as a permanent waypoint. This will guide thieves right to your door whilst you are sill trying to find your way home because some scroat has stolen your GPS receiver.

How waterproof is this bag?

Apologies for the delay in replying. There answer is very. I have been out in some serious downpours with this bag and never had any water ingress. The material does get wet but the whole idea is that the wetter it gets, the tighter the fibres press together thus keeping the water out. It works.

BTW, the underslung light bar is useless. If you get one of these, and I highly recommend you do, chuck the light bar away.

Re: CTC Magazine readers

I hope I don't get shot down in flames but I think the magazine is a tad amateurish, contains too many articles on MTBing and the reviews never contain any kind of rating or recommendation. I certainly would not buy it if I didn't get it as part of my subscrition.

Re: No Clarkson Thread yet?!

If any organisation failed to act against someone proven to have "punched" another employee, I feel sure an employment tribunal would have a field day, let alone the police. I am afraid Clarkson has to go if the allegation is true.

My major concern is that the BBC is compromising its journalistic integrity by claiming, on its website, that Clarkson is 54 years old. Surely some kind of typo which should read 64? If not, then he must have had one heck of a paper round when he was a kid.

I did the 2 week end to end with PeakTours in 2012 and the Dover to Cape Wrath in 2014. Can't comment on the 10 day trip but I can say that Peak Tours are a top notch outfit. You will be well looked after.
