Re: Cycliq Fly 12 bracket- alternatives at sensible prices?

Anyone know of alternatives? I am not keen on spending £32.99 on a little bit of plastic.

Thanks

Re: Hebridean Way shout out

I think I can help a bit. If you are planning to return to either from Ullapool or Uig on Skye, you can book your bike onto a Citylink bus onward to Inverness. I have recently done this Ullapool to Inverness. It worked a treat but your bike just goes in the hold under the coach but ours were fine.

From Inverness you can get train to Glasgow & then Oban.

Details of the services carrying bikes are at https://www.citylink.co.uk/conditions-o ... /bicycles/

Follow the links for details. When booking add hold items and select bicycle.

Cycliq Fly 12 bracket- alternatives at sensible prices?

I have been given a 2 year old but unused Cycliq Fly 12 (Model CE122). I tried to mount the bracket on my bike and on tightening there was little resistance to the screw. Suddenly that little resistance stopped and it was clear that something had popped. And so it proved. The hinge had snapped.

Looking at the bracket the hinge is clearly weedy.

I note that the replacement on the Cycliq website is re-engineered to something much more substantial looking https://cycliq.com/product/fly12-handlebar-mount/

However, this bracket is an eye-watering £22.99 plus an equally eye-watering £10 for postage. Its possible to get entire cameras for less.

Does anyone know of alternative mounts for Cycliq Fly 12CE cameras, something that I can consider buying several of for my several bikes?

Thanks

The above is the way to do it.

I've no idea what other contributors to this thread do with their weedy 3 and 4 inch vices.

I can only think of one - main - use for a vice, and that is removing freewheels as Jupestar points out.
My take on this is to install a vice sufficient for the biggest bike fettling job you can imagine. Removing freewheels is an important use, but the biggest job I (rarely) use mine for is removing a stuck BB fixed cup. Securely tighten the BB flats in the vice and rotate the frame (usual caveats applying about not damaging the frame by over-exertion). This is impossible in said "weedy" vice.

Err, I meant web on mobile, as in the image.

Try https://www.parcel2go.com/. Enter appropriate size & weight and see what quotes you get.

mattheus wrote: 28 Jun 2023, 4:14pm Yup, this method works for me. It's quite time-consuming, but perfectly good if you didn't bring a laptop and the right cable with you!

My only problem:
geomannie wrote: 27 Jun 2023, 5:42pm
  • Create your new route on your phone using an appropriate app (I use Plotaroute) and download the GPX to your phone memory.
My favourite site is ridewithgps; on a phone, it does work VERY hard to force you to the app to view routes - from which you cannot do a "normal" GPX download. So make sure you know about an alternative such as (CUK Forum favourite) cycle.travel
Not sure about the RidewithGPS on the app (I don't have it), but if you use the web version its easy to download GPX files, though the download option is hidden. Top right of the web page is a button marked "More" which leads to an export as file option.

Absolutely it works, though for your peace of mind I suggest you try this at home first, rather than for real on the road. Just create a folder Garmin\GPX on the SD card and use that the same as on the internal memory. My knowledgeable son has just reminded me though that iPhones don't take SD cards☹️.

Correct, though Etrex offers a wireless of sorts, but only to another Etrex. It's not a WiFi or Bluetooth protocol as far as I can tell.

How to get GPX files onto an Garmin Etrex while out touring

Sometimes you change your route when out touring and you want to put a new route onto your Garmin Etrex. However, to upload a new route (GPX file) you generally have to connect your Etrex to a computer which you are almost certainly not carrying. On the road, what do you do?

Most models have a separate SD card. If so:
  • Remove it and replace the SD card in your phone with the one from your Garmin.
  • Create your new route on your phone using an appropriate app (I use Plotaroute) and download the GPX to your phone memory.
  • Use a file manager (Total Commander is good on Android) to copy the GPX to the SD card and place in the folder Garmin\GPX.
  • Replace the SD in your Etrex and you are literally good to go.
Unfortunately Android creates a few Android system folders on the SD card but your Garmin will ignore them. You can delete these at your leisure when you get back from your travels.

Sandy Bags wrote: 26 Jun 2023, 10:50am When I was looking for a folder, I also looked at Bickerton's and other cheaper alternatives to a Brompton..my advice is, don't bother! None of them ride like a Brompton does..and most of them are unlikely to last anywhere near as long. Actually, riding the cheaper alternatives nearly put me off the whole idea of a folder!
Bromptons seem like a lot of money to start with..well, they ARE a lot of money to start with, but they are very well made and can last a LONG time..there are still some of the originals around and they are worth quite a bit now..
And that's the other thing to consider, is that Bromptons have very high resale values..at one point, when demand was high and supply low, my Brompton was actually worth the same secondhand as what I paid for it brand new!!
If you can stretch to it, or buy one on credit..I would strongly suggest it. I rode one of the Bickertons you spoke of, it really didn't ride well at all..I, too, was attracted by the very reasonable price.
Kushti-Bok :D
Seconded on the Brompton. They have their foibles but are essentially very well made & reliable bikes. I bought mine nearly 20 years ago and it's still giving excellent service. Despite keeping it's value l have no plans to resell. It's simply too useful for those times that only a folder will do.

LollyKat wrote: 25 Jun 2023, 9:27am My parents bought Bikertons when they first came out to use on caravan holidays. They were happy enough with them but only used them to pootle around the camp sites. I tried them and thought they were utterly dreadful - VERY flexible (and inefficient), creaked all the time, and with a very twitchy ride. Honestly, I wouldn’t touch them with a barge pole if I were you.
Agreed! The original Bickertons were horrible to ride but then they did fold small and were light to carry. Revolutionary in their day. The Bickerton featured by the OP however seems a different beast. The styling is clearly based on the original but I see lots & lots of changes. I would expect it to ride much better than the original.
