Re: Rough-stuff touring wheels - frequency of re-truing

You don't say if the wheel was retentioned/trued after a run-in period of 100-200 miles. It's not uncommon for a newly built wheel to need a bit of TLC at this stage after which it usually keeps its "trueness".

The wheels I have built I use for loaded touring, usually on road but often on tracks, and generally they don't need much attention after the initial period. I am also reasonably light at around 71kgs which may help. Maybe you are just a bit unlucky?

Re: H Plus Son Rims

Hi amediasatex

Thanks for sharing the benefit of your experience with these rims. I am currently wearing out some Kinlin XC-279 rims which are fine but the deep (ish) section just don't look right on the bike. The profile of the Archetype rim is a bit similar, so hence my question about the classic looking TB14. I like the sound of them being hard-wearing.

You have given me confidence to go ahead with the TB14 rims. Cheers!

H Plus Son Rims

It is getting near time for new rims on my light tourer and I am considering H PLUS SON Archetype Rims having read good reports.
https://spacycles.co.uk/m20b0s116p3183/ ... hetype-Rim

However, the profile is perhaps a bit "modern" for my classic style bike and I was wondering about the H PLUS SON TB14 Rim, a more "classic" profile.

I have no knowledge of the latter and was wondering if anyone here could comment on the relative merits of these rims. They will be built onto Ultegra hubs.

AlanInBangor wrote: 9 Sep 2023, 9:16am We were supposed to be setting off today to ride it but last week my wife came off her bike and broke her collarbone while I was at home booking the bikes on the trains. I found accommodation scarce too, and in some places expensive, so I booked every night in advance. All refundable but we lost about £50 on train fares. Maybe next year, in the meantime I'll read any ride reports and accommodation suggestions with interest.
I'm so sorry to hear of your wife & your cancelled tour. In the event that you go next year I can suggest a couple of hotels. The Creebridge House Hotel in Newton Stewart was lovely, a classic slightly faded country hotel. Good beer, good food, lovely beer garden, friendly staff. Rates currently about £99 b&b for 2 sharing. I would stay there again in a heartbeat.

In Castle Douglas we stayed at the Imperial Hotel. Don't be fooled by the grand name. It's a very run down old coaching inn. Bar shuts at 9pm, no food other than breakfast and rooms where lots of things don't work (light switches, shower fittings etc). It's a bit chaotic & I wouldn't be surprised if it shuts soon. All the same, proprietors were very friendly & the rooms were cheap, ~£70 for 2 sharing. I would happily stay again but you might find a better option.

Hope this helps.

Re: Kirkpatrick C2C

We have just completed the first 100mile stretch from Stranraer to Dumfries before heading north up to Sanquhar. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Some lovely and varied scenery, quiet roads & lots of interesting wildlife to look at (we saw slowworm, kingfisher, little egret, Daubentons bat & red kite).

The area is a bit devoid of shops & cafes which only exist in the bigger towns. It's worth planning your stops in advance. Accommodation is also a bit limited but we managed to book cheap(ish) hotels in Newton Stewart & Castle Douglas. Kirkcudbright accommodation was limited & expensive.

There is so much to see in the area it's actually a shame to pass by so quickly but we did our best to visit as much as possible.

The first part at least of the Kirkpatrick C2C is highly recommended by me.

hoogerbooger wrote: 22 Aug 2023, 9:17pm Geomannie: did the owatrol in your use remain feeling almost tacky when dry and has it proved scratch resistant?

( I did a test with owatrol on parts of an old frame . It still feels almost tacky even when clearly dry....now 18months to 2 years later. Perhaps not tacky....but can't easily run your hand over it...squeaky!. On one section I over sprayed the owatrol coat with a spray clear coat.....but it still doesn't feel like a nice smooth laquer finish)
I have used it for touching up one frame & substantially repainting another. In both cases it dried pretty much within 24 hours as I remember. The finish wasn't glossy hard like a smooth lacquer, but certainly not tacky. It's not a finish for your best bike but for covering up rust patches on a working bike it works fine for me.

Re: Treating Rust

I will restate Brucy's top tip of using Owatrol Oil to cheaply & easily keep a rusty frame in use without the expense & hassle of powder coating or respraying. You simply remove the worst of the rust & paint it on. It leaves a tough clear(ish) rust-resistant surface which you can paint over if you want. I have used it and while not the prettiest does the job, at least for the time being. The small tin goes a long way on a bicycle frame.

That seatpost has long layback. Do you know the brand / model?
Seat post was branded as Holdsworth Gran Sport from PlanetX, no longer available as far as I can see.
The seatpost is nigh on identical to the one on my touring bike (photograph posted upthread but not showing it very well). It's a Velo Orange Grand Cru long setback seatpost. The main (only?) difference is the silly premium for the VO branding.
The Holdsworth version was only £24.99, about half the price.
