Re: Rapha 500

My impression is that most UK rides are on the road. Is this changing?

Re: Rough riders events of old

If my memory is correct there used to be Cyclists v Harriers races where part of the course went over the racecourse at Epsom Downs

However definitely do not let down the tyres on the offending vehicle, at all, what so ever...
Why not?

Re: Kilometers or Miles?

I used to celebrate a birthday by riding the miles that matched the new age. Increasingly long rides in December led to a conversion to kilometres.

Now it's once round the block on the e-bike

Re: Why people don't post pictures of their bikes in kitchens anymore?

We once had a club member who had 5 bikes hanging in the only bedroom of his first floor flat. I know because I was taken up to look at one of them. Not surprisingly he was a bachelor!

Re: Getting to a Ride/ Transporting Your Bike

Like the majority of cyclists in the 1950s I only ever had one bike at a time. This was used for a 5 mile commute, club runs and with another pair of wheels, timetrialling.

Getting married and moving meant a 16 mile cross country commute with no viable public transport so a back up bike was an essential. I bought one from someone who had just got engaged and was giving up cycling..

I rode 10 miles to collect it,, riding home with the new bike alongside, holding it at the centre of the handlebars. Fortunately no hills and not much evening traffic

At one time since I had 5 bikes and 3 trikes in the shed. Now down to an Orbea Gain e-bike and a Spa Audax that I can't bear to part with.

Re: Getting to a Ride/ Transporting Your Bike

In the 1950s / 60s many of the competitors at Herne Hill track got there by bike, wearing their track bike across their back.

A road/path model, where you ride to the race,
carrying your track tires
Brings back memories of Saturday afternoon rides from Epsom to Reading,(about 40 miles) B&B on the local council estate, race anything from 25 to 100 miles, second breakfast and ride home.

I badly broke my arm in two places simultaneously due to stupid showing off when I was 14yo, and I suffered no loss of pocket money as a result,
Did the showing off involve damaging someone else's car?

You don't know anyone with an integral garage? We have a classic beetle in ours.
I suspect that ours is the only integral garage on the estate that houses a car and not excess household goods
