Re: Does anyone own a Garmin edge touring?

Anyway, I’m not shelling out until I’ve witnessed a Garmin Bicycle GPS plot a route as good as a TomTom Rider. That may be never.

Well they may be with the Navteq mapsets which Garmin sell. You are correct that OSM compilers have differing classifications for 'Highways'. Velomap for example would behave the opposite of what you would like if Car was selected. It would give a bicycle leisure route.

Of course but my point was that you don't have to buy a card for the Etrex 20/30, there is enough memory installed to download 3 maps onto the unit.

You can choose between cycling, tour cycling and mountain biking modes to calculate the most appropriate route for the type of cycling you do, taking you on paved roads, unpaved roads or on paths and trails.

These settings are only relevant to compatible maps. Some OSM maps may utilise different definitions. For example, Velomap 'labels' NCN cycle routes as highways so that if you favour highways you get cycle routes. This causes a lot of confusion if the instructions which come with the map are ignorede.

Whilst not wanting to detract from the poignancy of your point. Assuming the motorist stopped and gave full details there would be no need for an arrest at this stage. A NIP may well have been issued.

Ayesha wrote:The big failing with navigation algorithms specifically for cycling, is there are 1,000,001 cyclists all with a different opinion of what roads are safe and which roads aren’t.
To please everyone is a task without end.
My personal opinions of what roads are safe and which roads aren’t don’t agree with most route planners that have a ‘Cycling’ option.
I suspect OSM for Cycling falls into the ‘For reasons of health and safety, we’ll cover our ass’ category.

Whether true or otherwise, there is always the option to install a generic OSM map which behaves differently. The beauty of the Etrex is that it is possible to install multiple maps without having to purchase extra memory. I generally have 3 maps installed and know how they will behave for various routing requirements. They will all autoroute but getting exactly what you want for every occasion takes a little time experimenting.

Exactly my conclusion. There may well be a bigger step up with the next generation of models.

They are both current models. The 30 has extra features, those being; compass, barometer and ANT+ connectivity.

Re: Does anyone own a Garmin edge touring?

A couple more thoughts on this. The Edge Touring looks cheap. I think that the white casing is the culprit, but also the increase in screen size is not matched by an increase in resolution so to an Etrex user looks 'thin'. This of course is just appearence, I am sure that it is as capable as the Etrex or other Edge's.

The mount, which is the same mount as all Edge models is good, but it doesn't feel as secure as the (proper Garmin not cheap copy) Etrex mount. The Edge can be easily knocked around in the mount by hands moving about the bar. The Etrex also has the option of a lanyard. The fact that you have to rotate the Edge through 90 degrees to mount requires space 360 degrees around the mount equal to the length of the Edge. This does restrict the mounting options and many users buy the optional extended mount.

I have seen the Edge Touring for sale with OS Explorer Maps for £160 (with downloadable voucher from Millets website) at my local Millets and still wasn't tempted! Etrex 20 from Handtec is £130 and £135 from Cotswold.

Re: Does anyone own a Garmin edge touring?

I don't own one but have played with one extensively. It works well but has no advantage over an Etrex 20 with free OSM maps installed. Indeed I would say that an Etrex 20 is superior in some ways. The main advantages of the Edge over the Etrex are; slightly easier integration with Strava, lighter (though not if you have to carry a charger),slightly larger screen, touch screen interface, mount included. Disadvantages are; less flexible menu system, screen gets dirty from operation (touchscreen), less memory (card essential and supplied), more space needed for mount (clearance needed for twisting on), less map detail displayed (can be increased in menu), charger needed for touring. They both do an identical job, but the Etrex has more useful off bike applications.

My view is get an Etrex 20 or pay very little extra for an Edge 800

Here in Hexham an excellent bike shop has also closed. A combination of high rents, long lease agreements and purchasers of web sourced bikes expecting cheap repairs.

Re: Saddle Bags

I have a Carradice saddlebag permanently attached to my saddle. Looks good, is waterproof and very practical. For short days out it carries my waterproof, repair kit, pump, loose change, keys, snacks etc. It has enough space for a day or two 'credit card' touring. I wouldn't be without it.
