Think I will just buy a new pair.
Anyone recommend something up to about £40? Thanks

Re: Waterproof Spray
Many thanks. I'm pretty sure both of my laps were wet yet one of the legs has all tapes in place. I will do the test or cycle in the wet and report back.

Re: Waterproof Spray
Thank you for replies. I now notice that one of the tapes on the inside of one of the legs has come away completely. I am tryi g to remember from a while ago when my laps were wet, but i am sure that the wtness was not condensation, but water getting in. I will try the bowl test later and report back. I do not know if tbere is a membrane present. The underside of the tapes appear to have a white plossibly plaztic type coating. I will try the bowl test and let hou know in a day or so the desults. Thanks

Re: Waterproof Spray
Hi, infact they are Altura waterproof trousers. They are in pretty good condition.they have reinforced knees and insixe legs close to the bkttom bracket area.it has taped seems and all look in good condition. The insides are a shell material. Looks like Goretex but it isnt. I do have that Nikwax washin liquid, but i am hesitant to use it as i beleive it is not good to soak ones waterproofs. As for the spray, i dont mind if it makes the fabric next to my thighs non breathable. If the spray stops the water getting in thats mor import to me. Thanks

Waterproof Spray
Hi, My waterproof trousers (Sprayway) I bought over 10 years ago. They are not waterproof on my thighs when I'm cycling. Just wonder has anyone tried those waterproof Sprays in a can. Did it work? How long would one of those 400ml cans last ? Thanks

Re: Tour North England : Ideas please
Thanks to everyone for replies.
Planning to go mid-June.
I could camp if my bike and I can take the extra load. I have some lightweight camping gear. I have a Thorn Addax tourer that is ok for medium weight loads (I need to check what that is).
There are quite a few suggestions for routes. I would need to read up about them before I decide. If you have any suggestions on where to look for information on the routes you recommended that would be appreciated, otherwise I would just do Google searches.
I like the idea of starting and finishing in York, but I might prefer another route.
The Ribble valley and Bowland have been recommended a few times.

Thank you very much for all your replies.
There's a few ideas there.
About the Lake district - is this popular for cycling too?
Thanks

Tour North England : Ideas please
Hi I live in Scotland and want to go for one week's cycling in North of England . I was thinking, Yorkshire or Cumbria.
I would be grateful for any ideas anyone has.
I would maybe stay in Youth Hostels.
Mileage per day : guessing , about 50.
I saw this site http://www.lakesdalesloop.co.uk posted elsewhere which might be a start.

Re: Difficulty remove Chain link
Thanks for all replies. After posting I found out I don't need to remove my chain to clean it well enough for me, but I will remember all said in case I need to remove the chain sometime. Thanks

Difficulty remove Chain link
Hi, I have a KMC 10 chain on my bike. It has a link which looks like it can be separated, however I can't separate it.
Clean it with degreaser, then try to push the outside links towards the special link, but the special link does not budge.
Very grateful for any help

Re: New wheels recommend please
Yes , I want to go for 28mm tyres.
£180 is much more than I would like to pay, so building wheels myself may be the way to go.
I need to point out that I will not be using this bike for touring, just commuting so no heavy weights to carry - maybe I could use 33 spokes instead of 36 spokes.
New spokes seem to be cheap, I should go for new, unless there is no reason not togo for existing spokes.
Hubs: I would like to use the ones on my wheels which are Deore, probably 135mm.
Will it be a problem for me to lace up the new wheel if the current wheel has 36 spokes and the new wheel is to have 32 spokes ? If yes, then i'll just go for 36 spokes.
Will it be a problem to lace up the new spokes if I am using the same hubs ??
Spokes - I wouldn't begin to know what kind of spokes I need to buy (but maybe I can just use the originals).
Thanks

By adjust, do you mean , simply pull the brake cable down then tighten nut so that brake pads are closer to the rim when the brake is not being used? If so, then that's fine.If you go for Chrinas or similar(Mavic Open Sport or Open Pro), then the rims are narrower and you'll have to adjust your brakes.
Why would I want a wider rim if I choose a slimmer tyre (35mm->28mm)?If you want 28mm tyres, I'd go for a wider rim - perhaps Rigida Sputnik or Mavic A319 or 719 with 36 spokes.

If the rims are narrower than the others you mention, then maybe these are the ones for me. Do they cost more, any disadvantage of the wider rims.If you go for Chrinas or similar(Mavic Open Sport or Open Pro), then the rims are narrower and you'll have to adjust your brakes.

Re: New wheels recommend please
Thanks everyone for all your replies.
Answers to your questions :
I weigh 75kg, 5'8".
I have not asked my LBS for quote for new wheels - I think they won't be cheap (Edinburgh Bicycle and Alpine Bikes).
I think I will try to build them myself given your advice.
The Galaxy is 2003 edition.
The tyres are on them are either 32 or 35mm, but I would like 28mm.
Is there a rim weight I should try to stay below if I want the wheels to rotate reasonably easily (on a budget though) ?
Can someone recommend rims and spoke nipples I can choose ?
Thanks

Re: New wheels recommend please
Thanks Scott,
I've never done this, wheel building, but willing to give it a try if you think it would be possible for someone with no experience.
Is there a Youtube video that might help .
And advice on where to buy rims would be good.
How much will it cost roughly ?
And, is it straightforward to swap cassette and hubs over ?
Thanks

New wheels recommend please
Hi,
My Dawes Galaxy tourer is my second bike, I only use it commuting or going to the shops.
The rims on my wheels are noticeably concave, should I buy new wheels and if so can you recommend something as I wouldn't know where to begin other than I would like
28mm tyres and the wheels , I don't want to spend much.
Thanks

Re: Upper body Clothing
It's great to hear what other wear on top esp. waterproof jackets and windproofs.
I saw this review of cycling waterproof jackets http://www.cyclingweekly.co.uk/group-tests/cycling-jackets-wet-weather-139198
The first one, the Polaris Hexon gets a good review and the link takes you to a £70 jacket on ebay. A Goretex jacket would cost twice that price, is it that much better ?
Someone said that a waterproof jacket would do as a windproof too, saving the need to spend on a windproof jacket and just spend on a waterproof one,
but is there a disadvantage to that ?
