Re: Removing stem from Ahead set

Thanks for all your suggestions.
The frame I am working on is Merciam 725Cro Moly. An adaptor sleeve has been fitted to the steering post.
I have,
1.Loosened the two bolts that fasten the Aheadset to the stem
2.Removed the compressor bolt and the spacers.
But I cannot move the stem up and down to carry out greasing.
I have sprayed in some Penetrating Release Fluid.
Could someone take me to the next stage please ?
Help appreciated

Re: Removing stem from Ahead set

Thanks for your prompt response. I will get it checked professionally. My real concern was that if I failed to carry out regular greasing the stem might become seized .

Removing stem from Ahead set

I am new to ahead sets having worked with quill stems all my life. I check regularly and grease both seat posts and stems. Could someone please give step by step instructions on how to remove my aheadset stem? the headset is Chris King. Many thanks.

Re: Of a helmet cover that fits the helmet

I use a Bell's helmet. Bell's make a cover that fits on with studs. I have Bell' visor that fits over the cover. Works very well. I am not sure if it is still available.

Re: Best/favourite snacks for on the bike

Before every cycle ride of 30 miles or more I have a large bowl of porridge. On the bike I favour treacle sandwiches. When I did triathlons with a 56 mile cycle segment I Carried and consumed two water bottles filled with Ambrosia rice pudding. In 60 years of cycling I've had the bonk twice, each time a few chocolate digestive biscuits got me going again.

Re: Compatibility 9 speed Shimano Alvio RD-430

Thanks recordacefromnew. I take your point about the pull distances. I was simply trying to find out if I could use some components I have. I think I will try a simple way and buy the strictly correct parts.

Compatibility 9 speed Shimano Alvio RD-430

Will a Shimano Alvio low profile long cage 9 speed rear derailleur- RD - M30 work with 6 speed freewheel, indexed 12-34?
And will a Shimano 8 speed shifter SL-R400 operate this rear derailleur?
Thanks for any help offered.

Re: Biopace chainrings

I have used the 48 x 38 x28 for 25 years. I like the feel of them and feel that I get a smoother cadence than with round rings. I used the 52 x 42 biopace too and liked them. I have round rings too. I emphasise that I like the feel of biopace and regret that it is difficult to find replacements

Rechargeable Batteries

I have smashed my B and M front light which was rechargeable. Can I use the the AA batteries in my Cateye Cube front light? I have an independent charger. The B and M came with its own charger and the batteries could be charged without removing them from the lamp. Thanks

Chain rings

I have a shimano Biopace 48x38x28 chainset. I want to order new chain rings with the same number of teeth. I don't think that the biopace rings are still available. How do I specify replacement rings? Will rings other than Shimano work. Thanks

Snake bite punctures

I was unable to avoid a water-filled pot-hole. I immediately punctured.I put in my spare tube. When I came to repair the puncture I had three snake bite punctures... there may have been more but I gave up after two! I was using Pasela Tourguard 700x 25 tyres and Specialised tubes. Would I have been better served with other tubes and tyres?
Thanks

Grease for Bearings

I have always used Castrol grease for bearings in pedals, hubs and bottom bracket and anti-seize grease for seat and steering posts. Can I use anti-seize grease for bearings too? Just curious.
Thanks

Grease Nipples

Years ago I had a cycle with a tapped-in grease nipple above the bottom bracket. Using a miniature pump action cylinder-shaped grease gun I was able to keep the bottom bracket greased. My wheel hubs also had a oil-fill hole. This was accessed by turning and moving to one side a spring clip. This was also a very effective maintenance feature. Does anyone make these now?
Thanks
