I have managed to book a bargain berth sleeper to Inverness but its a real pain as the Scotrail computer has a problem and is refusing to take bike bookings. (I am told they are working to fix the problem but it doesnt fill me with confidence!)
Added to this is the looming prospect of rail strikes and I am therefore looking at contingency plans.
It seems to me that car hire is a viable option. I have already booked Highland cycle transfers van from Inverness to JOG and I could get one-way car hire to Inverness for around £50.
This seems to be an option worth considering but I can't recall any discussion of it on this forum. I am sure this must have been done before. Is it possible to drop off a hire car closer to JOG?

Re: Bike security on train
Thanks Rob
What if its a sleeper?
No. I havent seen Jon either since he got back from ski-ing.
Have you got any preferred date?
Peter
assuming there is space, sit in the carriage that has the bikes in it

BTW - have you spoken to Martin Popp yet about a meet-up date?

Re: Bike security on train
I've also been told that it was not permissable to lock bikes.
I wonder what the insurance company would think of this?

Bike security on train
Last Summer while cycling around Cornwall I met a guy who had had the misfortune to lose his bike on the London-Penzance train.
His story was that he had booked the bike and when he put it on the train the guard wouldnt let him lock it "for security reasons".
When he got to Penzance - no bike and no sign of the guard.
Has anyone else come across this problem? It could be a major mission-breaker. This guy wasnt doing E2E and he was able to hire a bike and was insured. However that wouldnt be very practical if you have just arrived to start LEJOG without a bike

Re: Routing - Through the Lake district
We are doing JOGLE in May (21 days - 50 miles per day)
Our route takes us from Carlisle to Threlkeld (where we stay a night) then south via the west side of Thirlmere to Ambleside, Windermere and on to Kendall.
OK, the traffic will be fairly heavy but we are in no rush and the scenery is fantastic.

Re: Melvich vs Bettyhill
The Arran route is described in Phil Horsley's excellent book (Land's End to John O'Groats The great british bike adventure). You are the first person I had seen that had done it so I was interested. I like the idea of 2 nights there - will look at that option.
We have got first night booked at a B&B in JOG and I was hoping we may get to Bettyhill on 1st day. However after reading your journal I may go for Strathie / Crask to play safe.
I was planning to get sleeper to Inverness then train to Wick and cycle to JOG.

I notice you went via Arran. How did you find this route? I have been considering it as a possibility but wondered if the 2 ferries just added an unnecessary complication.
Also since you started at JOG, how did you break the first few days up in terms of distance so you stayed at the Crask Inn? (I cant see a day-by-day log on your website)

Re: Melvich vs Bettyhill
You've all decided me. we are definitely going to go via Bettyhill.
The Crask Inn sounds good but doesnt work out as a good staying place in distance terms. However will definitely stop there for refreshments.

Melvich vs Bettyhill
My wife and I are planning JOGLE next year and have the luxury of 3 weeks to do it.
We are therefore attracted to the idea of avoiding the A99 by heading West from JOG along the N coast before striking south across the Highlands.
Can anyone advise me of the relative advantages of turning South at Melvich along the A897 or heading through the hilly section to Bettyhill and turning south along the B871

Re: Lands End Sign Post
Why not use Photoshop to add the sign in the darkroom when you get home?
Come to think of it I could fake the pictures of the whole trip

My wife and I are doing JOGLE next May. we are starting at JOG for the reasons outlined by Mick F
I am puzzling over how best way to get to JOG. Has anyone experience of using the sleeper service?
