Re: Off the Bike
Mick, I wonder if you 'just think' every time you descend the hill towards the bridge - it's bad enough trying to stop in a car sometimes when it's wet (and motorists coming the other way ignore the 'single lane priority' signs) - and as you say the weather recently has been less than good.
Howver - I though I might cheer you up becasue from where I'm sitting (still in front of a pile of tissues) and somewhat to the west of you, the wind has taken a very starnge direction this morning - it's coming from the North West, which is almost unheard of! It means that the rain has stopped, even a touch of ''blue' in the sky - so go get the M out quickly!
The Lawyers - will do little, or attach little priority, unless you harass them - politely, but regularly! Be proactive!
kind regards, Braz.
(why does this machine take some pictures and not others - I don't do nowt different!)

Re: Depart from LE on Sunday 2nd August...
Being the technological wizzard that I am, I can't get the route thingy to work - perhaps the batteries are flat already?
Is there a new Masochistic Cycling Society that I've not heard of? - poor old Mick and poor old me, we say this to people so often - it's along way from LE to JOG, it can be quite hard getting out of Cornwall, so why make it a trial rather than a ride that you will remember for the rest of your life?.
The North Corwall coast and Dartmoor are very pretty, especially in sunny June when viewed from the back of a bus - but trying to cycle either of them when the weather is so bad, windy, rainy, cold and foggy - and the terrain is v. hilly - ain't fun! (to coin a technical expression!).
Seriously, it's been really rotton on the Moor lately - survival weather at times - and today's weather forecast suggests that the rain over the coming weekend will be pretty bad - so please all, less of the bravado and more of the common sense - we don't want to see any more 'plucked off of the Moor' headlines in the local Press!
Topsham? - I'd ride to Yeoford and get the train!
regards to all sensible cyclists, Braz.

Not exactly my bike, but I remember that Mick F had both a lot of grass and a sloping lawn, so I hope that a pic of this bicycle powered lawnmower might be useful.

Re: Trendy, but Invisible!
Oh good - I love a debate!
Regrettably, you can't know that - it's just a subjective opinion - as is mine. What we have found is that, when riding with a high viz vest on in poor conditions (riding down the A39 towards Wadebridge recently - narrow, twisty, pouring with rain) almost all car drivers gave us some respect, a wide berth, and if we responded with a 'thank you' wave of the hand they replied in kind) we do get less 'moments' than when riding without the vests.
I think that hi viz works, so I'm going to keep on wearing it - I've also ordered some dayglo underpants as well - for those very hot summer days when we ride as minimalsitically as possible.
kind regards, Braz.
It is a systematic failure of the way we look at driving to imagine that giving motorists more information will lead to them using it to increase safety.

Re: Trendy, but Invisible!
2 Tubs - I think I know what you mean!
I have an advantage over most drivers in that I'm also a cyclist, of the touring version, and cover many 0000's of miles a year on two wheels - so perhaps I'm more aware of cyclists than most drivers. Having said that, I like to think that I'm more aware of everything thats going on around me when I driving than most drivers!
And really - I can't understand the somewhat spurious argument that a driver, on a road with overhanging trees and in the pouring rain, will spot a cyclist wearing black as easily or quickly as spotting one wearing a hi-viz or rain coat.
It's about balance - if you ride in black in dark areas, don't complain if you get knocked off - or make a very small effort by wearing something bright that might save your life - it's self preservation, that's all.
Someone will come up with a statistic for the level of intelligence and ability of varing driving groups. The absolutely stupid, ignorant, 'get out of my way' driver can't be accounted for, but as you move up the scale one hopes that ability and awareness improve - and if these drivers spot that someone has taken the trouble to try and be more visible surely they will respect that effort and drive accordingly? One hopes so.
It's not a problem in France - in the dark or in poor weather you HAVE to wear a high viz jacket now - or get an 'on the spot' fine from your friendly Gendarmes. Not that this would work in the UK, because you never see a Copper - too busy doing Gordon Brown's paperwork to actively police the roads!
regards to all, Braz.
(I'll try another picture, just to see if it's still working - someone must have listened to us!) And no, it's not Hut Bike!

Re: Felicity Kendall
Mick, just caught 30 seconds before I turned it off - becasue I get 'turned off' by the media turning out these 'decorative but dim' people who they think will enhance programs.
But then I'm an old codger now, and can remember when blonde came naturally rather than out of a bottle - if you take off the dye, the eyelashes, the mascara, the foundation makeup, turn on the brain for a bit, modulate the voice into correct spoken English, and find a topic that's worth deconstructing - then I would hope to find someone interesting enough to talk to.
Take bikes - some of them look very pretty - but would you want (careful now!) to go very far with one? - more trouble than they are worth, most of them (Asda say that they are selling 20,000 £99 bikes a week at the moment) - guaranteed until you get them home, probably! But if you search hard, do your research, take advice, and find one that fits you - you get a companion that will not let you down, carry part of your life's load, and looks quite pretty as well! And they don't sell them in Hut Bike!
Ladies, this is not any sort of attempt to be sexist - if anything it's the complete opposite - giving credit and praise where it's best due.
I bet Felicity Kendal can read a map....................
