Re: Isle of Wight Ferries - info needed

If you ring round a few campsites, they can often offer you discounted ferry fares. I did this once when visting the Appledurcombe site. I'm told that the Orchards also offer similar deals. its a great place to ride!

Re: First Audax this year

Map essential unless you know the route really well. I was on an audax ride before Xmas when a group had to pack because they were cold and it was getting dark. They were 25 mies from the finish and one of them called a taxi to get some of them to the finish, who then had to return with cars for the rest. Hate to think of the time and cost! If they had had a map they would have known they were less than 5 miles from Crewe Station with a cheap and easy warm train journey back to the finish for all of them.
It's also good to study the route beforehand. T junctions, TL's and RB's XR's all force you to make a decision as to where the route goes. Its the left and right turns off the route that are important as if you miss one of these it usually means trouble . So its best to know where these come up and mark you route sheet accordingly.

Re: CORNWALL - Recommendations?

Falmouth/ Penryn (both have stations) and onto the Helford Ferry, magical. then B3205 over Goonhilly Downs, Ruan Major and A3093 to the Lizard.
Penzance Newlyn (visit the gallery), Mousehole and the pub if you like pasties and a good pint, Lands End you could make various detours to the coast beforehand eg. Lamorna. From LE the coast road to St Just and Cape Cornwall, (atmospheric.) You can then return to Penzance by any of the roads that go east of the coast road eg Pendeen, Morvah (nice crossing of the moors via a stone circle) Zenor or on to St. Ives and B3311 to Penzance.

HI Delilah. Interesting link.

Can you give a clarification on the fixings on the calf and ankle? There appears to be two sets of velcro? How effective are they? Flapping trouser bottoms would be my biggest concern but this looks a more than reasonable design. Can you also give a comment on sizing - i.e is the cut generous, or what you would expect....

(As you can tell. I'm tempted!)

Thanks

I usually wear these over jeans over normal trousers when commuting and they fit fine. They keep me warm and dry. I suppose they could be a little wide round the ankles when wearing just longs underneath but if that is a problem, this can easily be solved by buying a cheap pair of bike clips.
The Velcro staps round the ankles don't add much but they do keep the cut a little bit more narrow.
Size wise the size guide is accurate.
I'm pleased with them and I'm not really a big fan of overtrousers.

Re: Feb/March/April 2012 tour - ideas on somewhere warm?

Costa Blanca is 20C at the moment and Sunny. Plenty of cheap (well relatively) small pensions. Campsites are open. Excellent riding away from the coast and cheap to get to!

Re: SYHA hostel closures

That's very sad indeed. I've stayed at 3 out of those hostels recently. They will be sadly missed by me at least! It will soon be near impossible to do a good cycling/walking tour using just hostels.

Where are you? There are several places you could have it done in the northwest.

Re: Panniers or Rack Bag

If you're Hostelling and self catering then panniers are a definate advantage. You can pick up and carry food on your way to the hostel.
If worried about taking more than you need then pack everything once then empty everything out and repack leaving out everything but the essentials. A search of the forum will reveal some excelent threads about what and what not to take.

Re: November cycling base?

The Costa Blanca based in Benidorm generally has settled weather in November. Its cheap both to get to and accommodation is plentyful. There are loads of quiet routes that you can do once off the main coast road, great villages to visit. There are even two Audax perms that you can try your hand at. Throughly recommended.

Re: Route up the Great Glen from Fort Billy

Cunobelin's pics show the route very well.
You can do it on a road bike but I would recommend nothing less than 28cc tyres. It a very scenic route but will slow down your progress, but hey there's no rush!

Re: Cycling the A49 from Wigan to Hereford

I cycled from Ross on Wye via Hereford, Leominster and on to Whitchurch, in 2 very easy days, without hardly touching the A49, so it is possible to avoid it.
If you want my route please send me a pm.

Re: Crediton to Tiverton (Rob's Passage)

My route is largely based on it and may help you.
Leave Okehampton B3215. Through Belstone Corner to J with A3072, where R to Bow. 51/2 miles
R in Bow and lanes to Coleford and A377.
X A377 above Crediton and bear R towards Crediton.
Stay above Town to join A3072 where L then shortly R and lanes to Little Silver, Shobrooke, Thorverton.
X A396 to Silverton (There are major hills in the Bradninch area so head East from Silverton through village towards Bradninch but turn R thru Ellerhayes, Paper Mills and cross M5 towards Beare. Budlake and turn L onto B3181 to Cullompton) (café and P).

Re: need a bike!!!

The posters on this thread have been incredibly polite. Also I've just noticed that you've duplicated your request on another board.
Le Jog is a big undertaking. I'm not sure if you're confused or just trying it on, as I have no idea (other than a free bike) of exactly what you want.
