Re: Mystery fancy lugged frame.

Wondering if it may possibly be a design from Trevor Jarvis in Tenbury Wells, he seems to specialize in fancy lugwork, the present range is here http://www.tjcycles.co.uk/lugs.htm, none look like those on your frame but he also states that there are many discontinued lines, maybe worth dropping him an email.

What do you have to do to upset a hornet?
Swear at them?
Call them names?
Pull your tongue out?

Poking them in the eye with a lens can irritate them slightly!

Had a similar rattle when I built my bike up and like you found it difficult to pinpoint where the noise was originating from, eventually traced it to the Cateye computer rattling intermittently in its bracket on the bars, a piece of insulating tape between the bracket and the computer solved the problem.

The Candle Power Forums seem to cover making all types of lights including ones for bikes, may give you some leads on suppliers and designs.

Apologies for not replying sooner Jags, can't do a comparison between the Plus and Supremes as so far I have only run the Sherpa with Marathon Supremes 26 x 2", which so far, after about 400 miles or so have been trouble free, good in the wet and dry both on tarmac and on unsurfaced tracks. For their size they roll well, are not too heavy and give a very comfortable ride.

I nearly always have a camera with me, most of the time its an old Nikon Coolpix 5400, still takes excellent images and has reasonable manual overrides for most settings. Gives images like this....

If I'm going out with the intention of doing some photography rather than grabbing a few shots during the ride then I would always carry my trusty old Canon 20D DSLR and a couple of lenses, allows me to do decent macro shots like the one below....

I too own a Sherpa and cannot fault it, its running on 26 x 2 Marathon Supremes and incredibly comfortable, loaded or unloaded. Very stable when fully loaded, feels almost like its on rails, very confidence inspiring even on quick descents. Unladen its quicker and more fun than it should be, a great all-rounder, very pleased with mine.

Hi jonf, I think there may still be a few of the old steel framed Dawes Sardar left at the Bike Shed, http://www.bikesheduk.com/ , look under tourers, a little over your budget but by all accounts a strong and versatile machine. Nearly bought one myself but in the end saved a little longer and bought a Thorn Sherpa and cannot fault it, its very stable fully loaded, quicker than you might expect when unladen and extremely comfortable, if you could run to one of these don't think you would be disappointed.

Thanks zenzinnia, gave Spa a ring and asked their advice, they said the new fixings were easier to fit to a rack but they were less secure and prone to rattling, so looks like I'm going to go for the older Carradice type fittings.

I have these bars too and find them extremely comfortable, like julk they keep my shoulders relaxed and seem to help prevent wrist and hand ache. I have the Ergon grips fitted and these really do work well in combination with the bars.

Thank you Julk that's helpful, I'm still undecided though, I'm hoping to use these panniers for all purposes even shopping and am still unsure which fittings to go for, its a lot of money for me if I make the wrong decision.

Thanks again

Thanks for the replies, zenzinnia, I hadn't thought about carrying them off the bike so that's a good point, thank you. Thirdcrank, I think the old ones I was referring to are your newer ones with the red ratchet, they have just launched a newer one still that is supposedly easier to fix and remove from the rack but I haven't seen these actually advertised for sale anywhere yet so I'll probably go with the 'old' type.
