559 wheel into a 600a 541 bike frame.

Post by V4281051 »

Has anyone fitted a 559 mtb wheel into a 600a bike frame? There seem to be a few old gitanes or peugeot steel bikes on ebay..but they have 600a wheels which are 541 mm I believe..Can a 559 mountain bike wheel fit in them...?
Thanks

28-541 tyres you can buy eg

but they are less than 24" rolling diameter. For the brakes to work with a 559 rim you would have to be able to raise the brake blocks ~9mm. For a (say) 28-559 tyre (another size which is getting more difficult to find BTW) to fit you would also need an extra 9mm of clearance.

The other size that is close is 24 x 1-3/8" (37-540). Sometimes these tyres will fit onto a 541 rim, more often they won't. If you fit these wheels the brakes are going to work without trouble but you still need extra clearance in the frame for the tyres if they are the full 37mm.

tyres you can buy (in various widths too) but rims are slightly problematic; they must exist though because the size is still commonly used in wheelchairs.

cheers

Could you go to 520? Like 541 it isn't the most common rim/tyre size, Hoy Locust cyclocross style available in 32, there are a few sportier models available in the 23-25 width but IME not much else.

Of course you'd need to be able to drop the brakes 5.5mm and depending on the current tyres it may also effect BB height/pedal clearance.
