Where to find this rack?
Where to find this rack?
My mum is a very happy owner of a Islabike Janis - I am looking to fit a rack but nothing I can find has stays long enough to fit the frame.
The Islabike website recommends this - https://www.islabikes.co.uk/products/ja ... ggage-rack
They are out of stock and due to COVID/BREXIT/DEMAND - are unable to give me any estimate on when this will arrive back in stock. Plus I have a collection of high quality racks that would be suitable, if only I could find stays long enough!
Please help

Re: Where to find this rack?
Why does it need particularly long stays?
Could you use long stays designed for something else, eg:

Re: Where to find this rack?
According to one of the answers to customers' questions on the SJS webpage below, the Tubus Roundstays are 7.6mm diameter. They only have silver in stock in the longest length (350mm), but Spa have both in stock.
The Tubus stays are aluminium rods and are designed to be bent, e.g. to get a rack level.

were I you I would be trawling the LBS in your area , anyone who fits racks and mods them for discs ete etc will have found your issue before and the shops may perhaps have what you need, check also local engineering places who work with alloy might have solid alloy rods in various diameters which are usually forged so can be bent or machined.. will

I think we are on the same track here. You aren't really looking for a rack, you are looking for stays - this rack only fits becase Isla have made it fit for you. I had the same trouble with racks to fit my folder. I'm presuming that the wheel size* (Isla bikes) means that the rack stays have a long way to go to reach the frame eyes.
The stays are available:
https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/carriers-ra ... undstay-l/
You need to find a rack that you want (it may have to be Tubus to accept the stays), work out roughly the desired length of stay (they come in different lengths) and then bend them. I successfully used a pipebender (cheap internet purchase) but as someone said, a local metalwork place might be able to do it for you.
Anyway I hope I've understood you correctly.
* Oops, it's the frame size/configuration (the wheels are 700c) but it's the same problem.

Re: Where to find this rack?
AFAIR, it was only Tubus that uses these roundstays but something rings a bell that there might be others. Just look in your collection to see which rack would accept the Tubus stay and go from there.
And from that link above:
New struts ordered and delivered
Pipe bending tool ordered and delivered
Struts bent to 50 deg - perfect
Rack fitted
Job done. Brilliant

Re: Where to find this rack?
I would have thought taking the bike, rack and (straight) stays into the LBS would do the trick (not even as a favour, just a "repair" job or even a friendly garage. I didn't really have that option but I'm pleased I did it myself as the rack got transferred to another folder and needed a lateral bend as well - job sorted!willcee wrote: ↑18 May 2021, 10:25pm were I you I would be trawling the LBS in your area , anyone who fits racks and mods them for discs ete etc will have found your issue before and the shops may perhaps have what you need, check also local engineering places who work with alloy might have solid alloy rods in various diameters which are usually forged so can be bent or machined.. will

Re: Where to find this rack?
How do you get round the need for an eyelet at one end? I have a feeling there is a widget but I can't place it.

Isn't the suggestion above to use strip that either comes with holes or allows them to be added?

Re: Where to find this rack?
But you can buy round stays with an eyelet at one end, as linked above. And use something like this to connect the stay to the rack.horizon wrote: ↑18 May 2021, 11:43pmHow do you get round the need for an eyelet at one end? I have a feeling there is a widget but I can't place it.

Re: Where to find this rack?
As posted above, SJS also have some rack stay extensions & adapters for tandems. We have have them for our Thorn.
https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/carriers-ra ... 0-mm-long/
might work? I can post a picture of our tandem pannier rack if it helps?

Re: Where to find this rack?
Tubus stays fit in Tortek racks too.
Re: Where to find this rack?
Yes, the round stay is the solution (it is the bending that is the issue) and the widget for attaching at the rack end that you show is indeed already there on the (Tubus) rack. What Colin suggested was eyelet-less but I didn't spot the "ali strip" in that it is possible to drill a hole through at the frame end.. I can't see from the photo how it attaches to the rack end but this too might (IMV) require a bit of jiggery-pokery so for the OP the round stay might still be better.
