Commuting wheels ?
Commuting wheels ?
Need new wheels for my commuter bike.
700c, 22mm wide rims for 35mm tyres, QR, Cassette, with tough rims so that the brakes don't wear them out too quickly!
Now this bike is not one that i spend money on easily
It's the "old dog" that rarely gets cleaned and gets regularly abused so i don't want to spend a fortune on super hand built wheels although i know they are often worth it
Suggestions please, has anyone got recommendations from use ?
Need your advice from real users so i can go searching with some fore knowledge
Thanks

Re: Commuting wheels ?
well Sputnik rims are a good strong choice with a fair amount of thickness for rim brakes.
But you can't specify wheels without knowing hub width, gear type, wheel size etc.
BTW rebuilding old wheels with new rims is often a good scheme; the Sputnik has an ERD value that is shared with lots of other rims so it is a good choice from that point of view too. £40 buys a pair of these rims.
cheers

Re: Commuting wheels ?
I s'pose the up front question is how much do you want to spend on them?
And as Brucey says, what OLN is the rear?

Re: Commuting wheels ?
Rose bikes are good, if you don't want to do anything more than some stress relieving and a bit of truing. You can buy an LX hub rear wheel for about £60 from them, add another £20 for a matching front.
Re: Commuting wheels ?
Thanks , i'll let you know the result.

Re: Commuting wheels ?
SJS Cycles also have a budget pair of touring wheels for £80.

Good choice in my experience (or my friend's to be more correct) who bought one of their rear wheels (only screw-on freewheel) and despite his 17 stone and power it has been good, not a wobble in sight!
Re: Commuting wheels ?
You could use it as excuse to get a dynohub for commuting

£81 pair of wheels includes DYnohub

Not such good hubs
The one's from Rose that I linked are much better quality Shimano LX hubs and quality rims, with no compromise on the DT Swiss spokes either, plus they were in in my hands within 7 days IIRC.
