where I can get a 9 speed triple f/mech

Post by whoof »

I'm looking for a 8/9 speed braze-on triple front mech.
Between me and Mrs Whoof we have two bikes with 9 speed Tiagra triple STI and one with 8 speed down-tube or bar end (both Ultegra, I swopped the down-tube for bar-end yesterday I might change it back). I had one in my spares box but put it on yesterday. Look in the internet I can't seem to find any fd 2303 or R440. Only Winstanleys say can pre-order one but it doesn't state whether it's a double or triple other than that is US ebay.

I've seen a Claris one but it's got a really wide inner plate and don't think it will work with older Shimano STI levers.

Thanks

Is eBay any use? It shows the Claris you mentioned

From Tweek Cycles a Claris FD-2403 braze-on 8 speed triple. I'm surprised this wont work.

Thanks for the reply. I don't think either of these work with 9 speed triple STI levers.

Thanks have you used one? Looking at the website it says the capacity (difference in teeth) is 20.

Winstanleys are selling them for £9.99 but quote them as being 50-39-30 again 20 tooth difference.

This review says they work well unless you try to exceed the capacity but if you have used one on a different set up I would be interested to hear your opinions. Mrs Whoof runs 26-39-52

It's the way the mech moves. It's not just left to right it also comes up at the same time. The 10 speed shimano mechs with a fat inner plate pick up the chain and then jam it against the middle chainring if you use it with 9 speed STI levers. I bought one a few years ago and after a few hours and adjustment and not being able to get it to work I gave up and took it to a bike shop. They took one look and said 'it won't work it's not compatible'. I did manage to get to work in the end but it was quite drastic. I used the inner plate of a 9 speed mech as a template and drew out it's shape on the 10 speed one with a black marker pen. I then used a grinder to grind the inner plate down and it worked. I would prefer a better alternative.

It won't be the STI levers that are incompatible with the mech, - all Shimano road front mech cable pull (up to 10 speed) is the same. The chainset is more likely to be the issue. But if you compare the ring sizes of the 3503 CS with your own, that may reassure you. They seem to be a fairly standard 50/39/30.

I may be wrong, but I doubt the up/down movement of these mech's is significantly different. They all seem to move negligibly up and down when moving left to right.

You were mentioning having trouble with a 10 speed mech. Sora 3503 is 9 speed - I'd say this mech should suit very well as long as your chain ring ratios aren't too unusual.

I would agree that it might possibly work with the Sora 9 speed, but they do look very much like the 10 speed mechs which I've tried and I can't get to work, so they might not. It's annoying how manufacturers tinker with designs and in doing so introduce incompatibility. Someone has kindly found a couple of mechs that are direct replacements so I'll get one of those. When these become totally unavailable I might take a chance on the Sora 3503.

Thanks anyway.
