Squeaky spd shoe/pedal
Squeaky spd shoe/pedal
Is there a way to stop my pedals/cleats squeaking when I'm clipped in. So annoying.
Re: Squeaky spd shoe/pedal
If you find the answer then let me know.
Mine, especially the right one, squeaks when climbing.
Not been able to fathom out what it is. Helps if I squirt water on the pedal/cleat or if I slightly twist the foot.
Tried raising the shoe by putting a layer of "shoe-goo" on the soles but not worked.
Changing the cleat didn't work either.
Need some new ideas.

You'll never know if you don't try it.
Re: Squeaky spd shoe/pedal
a light squirt of GT 85 will usually do it, unless the squeak is actually inside the sole of the shoe; this happens quite often.

Re: Squeaky spd shoe/pedal
I think for me it is a result of my foot twisting slightly on the pedal. If I concentrate hard on my pedal action I can make it stop! But it soon comes back. Will give the GT85 a go!
Re: Squeaky spd shoe/pedal
GT85 or flat pedals then!

Or possible swap to SPD-SL.

Re: Squeaky spd shoe/pedal
Having many bikes with PD-520 pedals which eventually squeak (oddly the right one mostly), I just use a quick spirt of liquid grease on the pedals mechanisms and their springs until the next 1000 miles or so
Should add that many 10s of thousands of miles are mostly quiet - even with worn out SH-51 cleats

Re: Squeaky spd shoe/pedal
It's the cleat rubbing as your foot moves slightly as you pedal, I get it on my bikes but a few drops of chain lube on the springs and where the cleat contacts the pedal soon cures the noise. I need to treat my pedals before I commute again on Wednesday.
Try pedalling along and consciously hold your foot at an angle in the pedal and listen to the noise you don't hear.

A smear of grease on the cleat (all over) and the pedal. I do mine every time I lube the chain.
Re: Squeaky spd shoe/pedal
Did you know that if you take the insole out of your shoe you can get at the plate that the cleat screws into? I'd try removing the cleat and spraying the parts of the plate and cleat that contact the sole with silicone or some such and then reassemble. Take care not to under or overtighten the cleats you don't want them coming loose while you're riding, I believe 5nm torque is recommended.

Similarly I've used petroleum jelly with good effect - possibly a little messy if you wear your cycling shoes indoors on a carpet though
Without my stoker, every trip would only be half a journey
Re: Squeaky spd shoe/pedal
I've a pair of Sidi SPD shoes that had a squeak sometimes, depending a bit on how I was pedalling. I eventually tracked it down to where the heel cup overlapped with the trim at the back of the heel. A tiny dab of silicone grease in the overlap cured it.
I personally wouldn't put grease on the cleats, but I do periodically (maybe twice a year) put a little bit of oil on the springs & pivots of the pedals.
