if the Alpkit Love Mud Juice hub dynamo is any good?

Post by niggle »

It looks just like an SP PD-8 but is just slightly heavier and a fair bit cheaper. I have read via Google that it is not just a re-badged SP and is Chinese made (SPs are made in Taiwan I think):

EDIT: just seen this image which suggests Taiwanese manufacture after all:

Looks awfully like a SP hub dynamo to me; do you suppose they source from the same factory in Taiwan?

I have no idea but it does seem incredibly similar to me. I may buy one just to see- Alpkit seem to be a trusted outfit in any case.

they may well be very similar looking but I do not think they have the exact same internals; the SP-PD8
Image

appears to have German StVZO '~~Kxx' approval '~~K845' whereas the juice hub appears to have '~~K1xx' markings

This suggests to me that the internals of the generator were perhaps subject to a much older approval (I think the numbers go in date order; I started to collect them but I can't find the list I started just now... )

cheers

Resurrecting this thread, anyone have any info/views on this dynamo?
I see at the moment that they are out of stock on the Alpkit website, but I am a fan of Alpkit equipment (although I have not tried the cycle kit), I have a down jacket and sleeping bag from them and both are good.

I'm looking for a hub dynamo for a LEJOGLE in 2017 and much as I'd like a SON, I can't really justify the price :(
(If my wife finds out how much I've spent on building n+1 for the trip I'm dead meat  )

I've bought the Alpkit/sonder camino Ti bike with lovemud components. It's a fantastic bike and I haven't had any problems with the components

I also bought a couple of their merino wool tops which are very good.

The returns policy and aftersales is also very good

I'm going back up to the factory in Nottingham tomorrow to have a look at some more stuff

In the end I went for a Shimano DH-3N80 as the Alkpit hub was out of stock, similar price and good spares availability.

EDIT: the SP PV8 is similar to the Alpkit and priced between it and the SON: http://www.tritoncycles.co.uk/component ... GwodlWADYA

l've been using the lovemud dynamo hub from around the end of September. It hasn't done a lot of miles as its on the utility machine, although I've done some off-road riding on it, including a fair bit of mud and water...
So far so good, it just works. So yes I'm happy with it.
Well, that's probably jinxed it!

I think you need to be a bit careful in comparing these hubs, even those looking identical may not be. For example I understand the Supernova version has improved seals.
