Sainsburys to trial bike deliveries : electric assistance this time
In a world that seems rather short of positive new at the moment, I was rather heartened by this.

Re: Sainsburys to trial bike deliveries
If the bring it out around my way, I'll have a delivery once. But then being who I am, I'll continue picking stuff up from Sainsburys meself.
I do like the idea. But, buying stuff on my bike is too ingrained into my routine.

I have been looking for a job. Is there a Sainsburys in Gunnislake?

Re: Sainsburys to trial bike deliveries
I was wondering why this had to be a separate service - couldn't it just be part of the normal home delivery, and the orders that are a suitable size/distance to go buy bike do so, everything else goes by van. Quick search found the answer, it's guaranteed 1 hour service.

I like the Guardian's standfirst.
Using peddle instead of pedal usually makes me wince, but a good choice there, I think.
Can't help thinking what my 20 items would be if I was in a mean mood. Beer, cat litter...

Staff on bikes will peddle up to 20 items in south-west London via Chop Chop app, competing with Amazon’s Prime Now

I used to do it on one of these - bit of a [rude word removed] in a head wind

Not for nowt did I used to lead a ride called The Peaks of Lewisham around those parts.
On a more serious note, cute as it all sounds, I fear it is yet another sign that Brit society is headed for a neo Victorian age. Unless ...

I can nip to my nearest Sainsbury's and back on my bike for a small shop in much less than one hour.
Re: Sainsburys to trial bike deliveries
Can't see them doing the 50 mile round trip for me.
Re: Sainsburys to trial bike deliveries
For short hop deliveries within cities and large towns it will work but it's limited to how many deliveries to the hour compared with say an electric trike or a Freight 8 with electric assist, with a bigger pay load.
I'm surmising Sainsburys have done their homework though and think it'll workout.

My sainsbury's, tesco, morrison, Iceland, home bargains are virtually equi-distant at circa 7 minutes each way. Though out route to tesco can be done in about 51/2min if I'm gunning it seeing as it's a 6% downhill for some of it on the way there
The bike set-up doesn't seem to be particularly suitable for deliveries IMHO, rather have rigid side panniers and maybe a wider but flatter top box.
