What's this on my new wheel and why?
Forgive my ignorance, but what's this cog on my new front wheel and why?
Re: What's this on my new wheel and why?
It's in case you want to run disc brakes. You bolt the rotor onto it.

Aah, cheers[emoji106]
Re: What's this on my new wheel and why?
Are you going to run a disc brake?
If not, are the rims meant for normal brakes?

You'll never know if you don't try it.

Or you can bolt a cog to it, fixed gear.

Re: What's this on my new wheel and why?
It was advertised as suitable for V brakes and disc brakes. I'll use it for now and see how I get on. I may convert to disc brakes if I feel like it would be beneficial...but that's a whole other thread![emoji4]

But it's a front wheel! Why would you bolt a fixed gear cog to a front wheel?

Turns it into a back wheel, or it stays on the front and you have AWD aka chelsea tractor

I thought that you needed different forks for disc brakes (or rather strengthened forks to handle the different loads from disk brakes) - as well as attachment points, etc.

Disc brake suitable forks can be purchased for as little as £20.

cycleruk has a very relevant point here - if it was me, I'd go back to the bike shop and fully check it out with them.
Now, please pardon my ignorance as well, but is the spokeing correct for a rear wheel, and particularly a fixed rear wheel - and pardon further ignorance, but would a rear wheel fit into front forks? - I know that bikes and their components vary widely and wildly, but on my road bikes (the only type of bike I've ever had), a fixed or otherwise rear wheel would not fit into front forks.
I have to wonder what kind of bike shop would sell a wheel without asking the kind of brakes you use. Do check on the rims.

Re: What's this on my new wheel and why?
It was an internet purchase. Entirely my mistake. It fits my front forks fine and my V brakes work fine with it. I have no intention of using it as a fixed gear rear wheel so i'm happy with it. I'd love to have the type of relationship with my local bike shop

...that would allow me to avoid this type of thing and avoid fleabay, but I'm sad to say I find them rude, snobby and arrogant, so I will just have to learn from my mistakes. Happily the wheel is fine[emoji106]

since every one has given the sensible answer I add is how you attach an electric motor to turn the bike into a pedelec
