I'd put £ 1,000 towards a decent hand-built made-to-measure steel frame- the sort I've always ridden, at least since I could afford it. I'd do that because years and years of experience have shown me that it's what I'd want. Trouble is - it'd outlast me by years and years.

Hi,
Hmm I have come to this late so apologise for not reading all the posts.
My 1983 Steel Koga-Miyata 60 CM weighs in at 10.5 kg but does not have discs.
Through axel I know nowt as never seen one but most motorcycles have this.
I suppose it eliminates bad alignment when replacing wheel and the dreaded squeak from the disc you get where the wheel is sitting on threads of the axel.
Otherwise its a break from the traditional QR we have used for some time.
Is the minimum hole through front forks for axel 10 mm? So you can fit a traditional axel if needed, no I see its 15mm, so are the holes for axel closed eyes not drop out?
US have problems with claims through misuse of conventional QR off road....................

Cx bikes preferably but road bike's also very welcome

With £1000 I would still be short for a set of Campagnolo Bora. Let alone the rest.
So I got myself a Brompton, practical and keeps its value 8)
Btw, is the only off-the-shelf bike I bought myself since, uhm, when I was 18 and this was 25 years ago?

Perhaps with £1000 I could get a 700c frame to be used with wide tyres? Gosh, I don't need another bike!
It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best,
since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them.
Thus you remember them as they actually are...

If I had an it more I'd rather get a VTX :)
A shortcut has to be a challenge, otherwise it would just be the way. No situation is so dire that panic cannot make it worse.
There are two kinds of people in this world: those can extrapolate from incomplete data.

I'd just go second hand and let someone else pay the premium. At least then if you make a mistake you can re-sell and not lose much, if anything. I've just picked up 2 bikes, 2016 models, 1 barely used, 1 not used at all, both for less than half the new price. Be sure to try a few first though. You could perhaps hire your favourite for the day and see how you get on with it..
