Ultrasonic cleaner fluid

Post by mattsccm »

What's the best stuff to use? Specifically for cleaning gummed up carbs.
Is it machine specific?

I have an ultrasonic cleaner with a tank about 30 x 20 x 20 cm - I just bung about half a cupful of Screwfix cheapest degreaser in the water - it seems to work.

I have a small ultrasonic cleaner, and I put water in it.
The object I want cleaning is put in a tin or tub containing white spirit, and it's even been known for me to use petrol.

The tin/tub is placed in the water with due regard to levels of the fluids ........... and the unit switched on for as long as it needs.

Used to use 1,1,1-trichloroethane. many years ago, it was great stuff, until they realised it killed the planet and banned it under the Montreal protocol.
White spirit now.
If it aint broke, fix it til it is.

A few years ago up at Alderley Edge we had a lock that was a pig to undo, once it was off we suspended it in jar of petrol. The petrol and jar were secured onto the base plate of the generator we were using and the lock tied to length of string fastened to the genny frame . After a couple of hours most of the crud was in the jar. Not quite ultrasonic but it worked.
Percussive maintainance, if it don't fit, hit it with the hammer.

Excellent! :D
Petrol is really good as a penetrant and cleaner, it's just that it's a bit dangerous to use. I use it outside in the open air.

I've used a petrol soaked rag a few times to clean my chainset teeth whilst still fitted to the bike whilst the chain is soaking in a jar of Gunk.
