Good afternoon all,

Im new to the forum and just after some general information regarding a bike I have or advice on how to find out further information about it.

I believe its a Mercian cycle, its been in my garage for quite a while so is full of dust.

I don't really know where to start looking into information for it to be honest. its ridiculously light!

Welocme to the forum.

That'll scrub up well . Someone will be along soon to tell you how to work out how old yours is. In the meantime: http://www.merciancycles.co.uk/

As said there are many people here who will offer help and information, and will probably comment later when they are home from work.
I would like to mention though that your front wheel is not done up properly, the quick release lever needs to be in the same position as the rear one.

Edit. You do it like this if you have not used one before.

How to find the year of manufacture from the frame number, here. The frame number is typically found stamped under the bottom bracket.

Serial number is usually under the BB shell. Five digits.
First three digits are the fame number, and the last two are the year. Probably another separate number indicating the actual builder of the frame.
However .............. some years ago, Mercian had a fire and they lost all their records.

I took my 1986 Mercian back to them in 2007 for its 21st birthday refurb, and asked them about the info of when I had it built, only to be told about the fire.

Over the bottom bracket cable guides, long wheelbase and quite gappy around the brakes so quite old I think.
The brakes look like 1950's GB Coureur but I am not an expert on this period.

You could be correct, though when I had mine built, I could have specified 27" clearances or 700c clearances.
I had the choice, so went for 700c and as tight as they could make it but still use mudguards.

Therefore, it's not necessarily that old as mine could have been like that had I wanted it.

It’s a pity the picture quality is not a bit better as it’s hard to see what the lug’s look like, but from what I can see they do look old.
BTW the new Mercian web site looks very nice.

Sadly, it is obsolete, of poor quality and beyond economic repair. Let me dispose of it for you... :)

Haha oh really :).

To be completely honest I am looking to sell it as I don't have any use for it and I could make better use of the money. I'm just interested in finding out information about it's history.
