Nothing in the Veteran-Cycle Club library and the The National Cycle Archive website is down for maintenance. The London Museum might be well worth a try

There is a copy of volume 1 available to download here, according to it, the plan was to publish the Gazette once a week in the summer and once a month in the winter. It's Nice to know the University of Michigan is looking after it.

There are some great ride reports, one rider, on stopping at a pub in St Neots and asking where he might bathe was provided with a 'light boat and a towel' and told to pick his own spot in the river,he seemed satisfied with this.Fun reading, the descriptions of the hills going up The Great North Road still apply.

Thank you both for your replies . Interesting how a copy of volume 1 {1878} found its way across the pond,to the USA . I had seen while back that this Museum had a bound copy, during my trawling of the net. The Volume 2 copy I have covers all of 1879 with a least one periodical per calendar month. All fascinating reading of the early days of a cycling club .
I also have a Volume 1 Gazette for "Cycling" dated 1891 . It is complete but a bit battered . Some lovely lithograph prints within .
This is my favourite .

Closer to home a CTC gazette for the year 1903 again interesting social history of all things cycling.

Great picture!

I note that he won the Great North Road 100 Scratch Race. My great uncle, Walter Topham, won the Great North Road Novices 50 in 1913 (in 2:41:19), and the 100 unpaced in 5:40:55 in 1914. Sadly he then went off to war, and never returned.

If anyone could dig up a similar picture of him, that'd be wonderful!

What a fantastic picture! And I certainly wouldn't want to mess with anyone with a name like Edmund Dangerfield :-)

OP, do you have any more photos from your edition, I (and many others) would probably love to see them? I'm going to bookmark this to read up on later and check out the online version of Volume I.

EDIT - just found the rest of your Flickr gallery, so that's my morning gone...:-)

thanks for posting!

Have you tried The British Library or National Library of Scotland?

Good pointer .Thank you .
Looking at the British Library, their on line resource appears to include monthly copies that were sent out to members of the club.
The information seems to suggest the club started in 1882 ? Detail goes as far as 1901 .
Purely out of personal interest I am trying to establish how long the club was in existance . There is plently of intormation for other early cycling clubs .
This is an interesting site, with plenty of links.

Thanks to members of the Pickwick Bicycle Club I now know the LBC formed in 1874 , making it to 31st cycling to be set up in the country . I have yet to ascertain when it with disbanded.
Thank you to all input on this thread . I gave me ideas for using the back door method for getting answers on the history of LBC.

Update >LBC disbanded in 1923 . Off to do more digging

A note in Volume 3 1880 gazette of the LBC .
Hub lamps are good, and paraffin has much value for
illuminating purposes ; but a South-Wester the other
evening, rimng over a combination of the two, was edified
by an explosion within his front wheel, which almost blew
him out of the saddle, and left nought behind it but a
couple of clips upon his front axle and a few odd scraps of
tin strewn about the road.

Hail modern lighting .
