How much YOU have spent This year on Bike related stuff?

Post by itaa »

My daily driver is an old cheapo mtb and I was under the impression that riding a bike is totally free , Now that I look at my bike and see what I have done with it, it all adds up..
How much have you spent on your bike related stuff this year?

For me.
£23 New set of tyres
£17 Bike rack and 2 pannier bags
£16 Cold weather clothing garments
£23 a Nice front light+18650 batteries+charger + a nice rear light.
£3 new brake pads
£10 for small bits ( some reflective stickers/Bell/ oil /flashlight mount/bike pump)

Total £92 for just some mundane stuff I thought costs nothing.
I think I have used my bike maybe 100x this year, per usage cost..Not so free after all :D

This last year my most-used bike broke a mudguard, got a replacement front tyre, and broke the rear axle (that was at least 60000 miles old, I think). The replacement parts came from my stash of bits, so the repairs cost me nothing but my time. It needs a new chain, which will cost £5, and brake block inserts which will cost about £2.

I bought a few cycling-related items such as clothing.

I also (ahem) spent a lot more money on other bikes I don't ride anywhere near as much as the first one, and probably never will.

....Go figure.....

cheers

Rear light. £24

Cassette, chain, bottom bracket to replace worn out items. £35

Two chains (for the spares box). £15

Folding bike, carrying bag, spare tube, multi-tool, rack-top bag, saddle. £220

Saddlebag (spares box) £30

New tyre, replace worn out tyre. £14

Aldi banana coloured jacket. £10

Estimated costs of the bits I can remember, mostly pre-loved. There were probably more*. All worth every penny.

*Edit - There were more, about another £100 of assorted bits and pieces which I might get around to using some day.

It's not been a good year :? with a few unplanned costs:
Snapped handlebar in March required new bar, stem, forks, wheel truing, dynamo servicing, cost around £200, plus another £600 related to the injuries and lost income.
Cracked frame (On the same bike ) has resulted in me spending around £1,400 replacing it and the bits that didn't fit.
Apart from that, 2 chains, I sprocket, I cassette, 3 tyres, pair gloves, pair shoes = about £150

This is probably more than I've spent in the last five years put together. Though even if I add in my other travel expense it's still less than I used to spend every year running a car :)

I bought a new frame and had it built up with stuff from an inherited bike. I bought some new stuff for it eg handlebars, stem, rack, Brooks, etc to get it now I wanted . Cost about £700, hopefully minus £200 when I sell old frame.

On my touring bike I had new rim, chain, cassette, rear tyre, brake pads and bottom bracket. Probably about £150 - £200.

Bought a couple of tops for cycling in charity shop, about £6.

I don't regret any of it.

I cycle a lot in cheap Asian countries and I often have other non cycling tourists saying to me that travelling by bike must be very cheap. When an 800 km sleeper train ticket is about £15 and that would take me ten days with all food and accommodation costs, it doesn't compare. Even the general running costs of the bike probably exceed their total train and bus fares.

Not complaining, just agreeing it ain't as cheap as many think.

I was doing well this year; no big projects so I had spent about £300 on bits and pieces. Then, suddenly a week ago, I decided to change a pair of handlebars and build a pair of wheels -- drat, that's another £400 gone. Next year could be a bit more expensive since I am looking at a respray on a vintage machine plus some replacement parts.

It's hard to say, or more correctly, I can't put an exact figure on it because I'm in denial.

Actually I buy very little new or at new prices. Over the years I've attended a good many cycle jumbles and that, together with bargains on the internet and the odd purchase from other forum members, means that I've probably got more stock than the average cycle shop, and more than enough for any new builds and to keep the current fleet rolling. I get pleasure from riding my bikes and I get pleasure from tinkering with them . The fact that I achieve this at bargain prices gives me even more pleasure.

Until a few weeks ago probably only a couple of tyres and a pair of disc brake pads. Oh, and I might have spent £30 on two chainrings, the first of which was the wrong size.

Then I had to replace a bottom bracket.

I bought a cheap (£39) unpainted frame from SJSCycles which I've now decided not to use and last week I ordered £400 worth of stuff to rebuild my commuting bike on a new frame.

So not a typical spending profile for me.

It's been a cheap year for me

Full bike service including wheel rebuild, new chain and cassette £150

New chain for other daily ride £25

Workstand £23

R&K mount £14

BB cups £14

Front mech £17

That's for a bit over 5000km this year - pretty low for me.

However bike one needs some work to sort collapsed freehub, bike two will need new brake blocks and tyres very soon and the jacket that was damaged a fortnight ago needs replacing.
Convention? what's that then?
Airnimal Chameleon touring, Orbit Pro hack, Orbit Photon audax, Focus Mares AX tour, Peugeot Carbon sportive, Owen Blower vintage race - all running Tulio's finest!
