Chainrings are different - they can be very obviously worn and still not slip.

Out of interest (not questioning) why different/why not?

I'd guess something to do with the chain being under tension when engaging with the chainwheel, but disengaging from the sprocket?

I think it's more that the chain isn't under tension where it feeds onto the rear sprocket.
I've certainly seen horribly worn fixed gear sprockets, so the difference doesn't apply there.
