Does anyone know what is the largest tyre size I can fit on my 3 year old Specialized Tricross Disc.

"the largest" will vary with how close you are prepared to run the tyre to the fork/stays/mudguards. Tyres are usually not the exact size they claim to be, either, they also vary in fitted width with the rim they are mounted on, so there is no fixed answer.

If you look at the 'rolling resistance' site, IRRC they usefully measure the actual size (width and height) of the tyres they test, and note the rim dimension that they used too.

that'd fit. So would some tyres in the low forties I would expect. BTW you can get away with tight clearances (<5mm or so to the stays) if it is dry gravel rather than mud that you encounter.
