There are plenty of other islands only to be reached by ferry, +1

That's true, and thank goodness for that....................but the motoring fraternity will be campaigning to wreck their peace and tranquillity as well if they find them.

Are there plans to extend the railway onto Skye, I mean, are there any votes in it?

No

Fear not folks because there are plans afoot to require cyclists on Skye to take a low quality and inconvenient diversion for their own safety (and to get them out of the way of the important traffic too). Lets face it, they already have some history of this kind of thing in Scotland Image

There's nothing in that linked piece to suggest anybody's talking about compulsion. And it's sadly true that a great opportunity was missed during the extensive road-improvement schemes in the northwest Highlands and Islands during the 1970s and 80s, when so many of the old single-track routes were straightened and doubled. You can see the remains of the old routes all over the place, untouched since that time. Had they been preserved and maintained as cycling routes at the time, when additional expense would have been minimal, cycling in the Highlands ever since would have been a quite different and more rewarding experience.

I wonder what it is like to live on Skye, is there a quiet season? I bet there are quiet places

Scotland seems a bit queer to me, the Hon Member for Skye made a speech using her own language. Many of the MSPs used headphones so they could hear a translation into another language

One of the best things about Somewhere near Scotland: George Mackay Brown, his books are worth reading twice

George Mackay Brown came from Orkney. He would probably have not claimed to be Scottish.

And stayed there too, I believe.

The same occurs throughout Britain - it's not only Scotland - wherever the religion of motorism is rife, and it's high-priests get into highways departments and small-mind politics it's the same. Their bleat will be that the restrictions are for safety reasons - but there are other and better ways of respecting the moral rights of cyclists to be safe and protected.

I'm going to unsubscribe from this thread, because after wonderful cycling tours on wonderful Skye it is so upsetting to hear from friends who've visited, and acquaintances who are residents, just how awful the roads have become since motorists have had unrestricted and uncontrolled access to what I've found to be the loveliest part of Britain.
