Looking for a carrier that I can suspend below a crossbar. Obviously there isn't any mounting points, and also whether a standard carrier would be strong enough. I"be seen types that can carry a wine bottle, but don't want that type. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

We call a crossbar a top-tube now
You can buy a standard wire bottle cage for the down tube and use that, it might be best to modify or cover the clips so they can not cause injury if you sit on them
Might be difficult if the top tube is level, not sloping, a standard bottle cage might sag under the weight because it would be the wrong way up

You could look at other bikes, see what they are fitted with

Does it have to be a bottle? My thinking was a camelbak type reservoir in a webbing pouch that you could strap onto/sling under the top tube.

The real question is Why? seems an odd thing to want to do, especially with the potential bang knees or other parts on it

Looks like a nice neat fitting but I have to take exception to SJSs claim that it doesn't scratch the frame. I have yet to see a cable tie that will not, at the very least, damage the paint surface.

Basically my MTB is quite old and has only one mounting point for a bottle.
I also suffer with neck and shoulder problems. Riding with a backpack is out of the question at the moment, or at least that's what my osteopath recommends.
I was thinking that placing the bottle carrier to the rear of the crossbar, it might be out the way of my knees.

Would a handlebar-mounted bottle cage suit your purposes?

If I managed to attach a bottle to a top tube I would probably bang my knees on it.

Have you considered a bum-bag/waist pack? I had one which would carry two 750 ml bottles (and plenty more) with ease. It was very comfortable even in hot weather.

Decathlon do a handlebar mount that you can also swivel 90 degrees so it orients usefully on a stem or frame instead.

John (who co-incidentally spent last Saturday at a workshop trying amongst other things to work out if you could mount a water bottle with air quality sensors inside it horizontally on a bike, and went into the local Decathlon for inspiration!)
